Shane is, he realizes to the sound of the steady hum of wheels over asphalt, nothing more than a stray fucking dog. Whining after any hand that’s ever given him a hint of care or a bone to gnaw on; snapping at the same heels when they refuse to let him any further than the front stoop; growling and lunging, unasked, teeth bared, at any threat that has the misfortune of stepping over him on its way to the door.
A fucking dog.
[AKA, What if you devoted yourself so entirely to your lifelong best friend and then you thought he died and then you fucked his wife because you actually wanted to fuck him and then he came back and then you kind of went crazy. “Why,” Hawkpaw finally asks, deathly calm, “did you say that?”
Leopardstar shrugs. “I didn’t see either of you coming up with an explanation. You’re welcome for covering your tails.” She ambles to her den and doesn’t look back at them.
Stormpaw can feel Hawkpaw’s gaze burning holes into the side of his head. He sighs and decides that he’s ready for this night to be over, and he trudges to the apprentice den. If Hawkpaw wants to stand outside and glare at Stormpaw from all the way across the camp, let him.
It’s not like he's the one who just told all of RiverClan that they’re in love with each other.

Tony stays by Steve's frozen bedside. He thinks of the cold-blooded nurse; he thinks of the biometric locks on every door and every other reminder that Steve Rogers is coming back to a hostile world, surrounded by people who want to use him. And then he wonders if Fury left this empty chair by Rogers’ bed on purpose.
Because he knew Tony wouldn’t want to leave.
He stays until he is kicked out, and like the addict that he is, he keeps coming back.
