You had that lovesick look that he had seen on Dick's face way too many times, and he was getting a little uncomfortable. It must be some sick joke. It doesn’t matter how hard he’s trained, how quickly he activates his quirk, or how desperate he is to feel someone’s hand safely clasped in his, the truth of the matter is: he’s simply not fast enough some days. It’s an unfortunate ache that he’s allowed to build a home in his chest, something he hates that he’s gotten used to, but has rationalized as part of his job.
He can’t even be bothered to care about the scrapes and bruises on his own body; can’t be bothered to care that the upper half of his hero suit is in shreds. Can’t be bothered to care that he feels like a dead man walking. The pain of his injuries will always be nothing compared to the pain of losing someone. The way the tips of his fingers still feel like they’re burning with the effort of his calloused hand reaching out in an attempt to save the man that was only a few feet away from you.

Lance picked it up and stared at it. He knew what it was. He had already decided that he wasn’t going. He couldn’t bring himself to. He could barely bring himself to open it.
He tossed it into the trash can.
