The space between his visits grows smaller, as does the space between their legs when they sit together on the couch, or the space between their elbows when Dice runs out of smokes at 2AM and there’s a 24-hour convenience store a couple of blocks away. He catches himself following Dice’s breath as it ascends in ladders of fog, the curvature of his lips when he smiles so wide that his eyes are forced almost shut with the weight of his cheeks rising, the way he beams, a star glinting brightly beneath the night sky. Ichiro watches Dice smoke, shadows the way his lips hold onto each cigarette, with precision and necessity, and, with time, Ichiro doesn’t feel the bitter pang of his stomach and chest dissent.
At long last, he is able to forgive and start forgetting.
