She leans in closer to sink the soft curls of chrysanthemum into the Shogun’s throat. Reflected in the kitsune’s eyes, Ei sees a mirror image of herself, frozen in time, lips sweetly and peacefully curved into a light smile, unperturbed by the experience as though Miko were feeding her dessert.
“Why...?” The reflection shimmers as well-contained tears finally start to well up in those eyes. “Why did it have to be you..?”
Ei travels backwards in time.

Miko horribly holds back a laugh at Ei's genuinely concerned expression as they both read over the flyer. Now this is pure gold and could not be any less accurate! In Miko's humble opinion, it should go a little more like this:

Here you will meet the pessimistic head shrine maiden, Yae Miko, who regrets her decision of beginning to write a romance novel that her mind refuses to let her think of a happy ending for and Ei, who seems content on spending her Mondays with Miko at the shrine while seemingly half-confessing her love to her every so often. Of course Ei isn't actually trying to confess! Oh, she's so funny sometimes!
Oh right, and it seems like everyone is convinced that the two of them are magical matchmakers. Miko isn't looking forward to all of the refunds that are going to occur.

Well, because even after a decade, she still hasn’t caught on to her best friend’s feelings for her. The romantic, I-want-to-kiss-you-softly-on-your-forehead-in-the-mornings-and-have-hot-passionate-wall-sex-with-you-during-the-night kind of feelings.
So, yes. Yae Miko is many things and oblivious (despite her intelligence) is one of them.
Or the "Ei is a useless lesbian and Miko is an oblivious gay and they're both just suffering but in a good way" modern AU no one asked for.

“Well, of course,” Yae replies, stepping back to avoid a swipe at her waist, “How else would you think about lil’ old me, hm?”
Ei can’t help it- she laughs at that. Yae is really something. She always has been. “Conceited, are we?”
“Please, Ei,” Yae is the one to scoff this time, “We both know I’m right.”
