Matt hasn’t killed them—he never does—but he’s lured his fair share that have, convincing them to get closer and closer to the lip before he takes them, pulls them into the grimy water, swallowing their screams, their sins. He takes a payment. He lets them go.
The business by his territory became less and less frequent. Rumors in the city ran rampant about the devil in the waters. Lies about deals, too, which Matt never made. He’s unwilling to debase himself that far. But he listens.

The tone of Matt's voice had Foggy on alert immediately. It wasn't filled with the usual bravado or certainty that came when he called. It lacked the soothing gentleness that appeared when he had returned home safely. He sounded quiet. Unsure. A little shaken unless Foggy was imagining that.
All things that pointed to something being very, very wrong.

And Mike starts crying then, hard and heavy and broken and Foggy is over to him in a second, pulling him against his chest and holding him tight. He curls his arms around those shaking shoulders and squeezes, tight as he can, until the shaking stops and Mike falls into some kind of trance, sniffling against Foggy’s shoulder.

Even in the darkness Foggy can see the softness in Matt's expression, the agonising surprise in hearing such simple words. Unable to look at him like that for more than a second or two, Foggy loops an arm around his shoulders, pulling him in against his side in a one armed hug.
