Makes me sad. I've always thought it would hurt anybody, even the Perfect Model Mountie that Fraser tries to be, to be so continuously lonely and identified as The Other. I really liked the structure of this fic — it's built out like an episode, so "Case Fic" is apt as a tag, but also like an essay and ALSO also like an allegorical fable getting a bit meta about itself.

You ever lived somewhere where you can't get That One comfort food? Somewhere where even a facsimile of that dish would mean starting at raw ingredients (half of them substitutes for the original), and milling, fermenting, toasting your way up from there? That's what being around TSH is like; it's a journey to a memory of a set of friendships, to Richard's repression and poor coping mechanisms, to a dark and beautiful set of slides clicking reluctantly past the projector light. And it's never right when you read anything other than the original, to your annoyance (with yourself, chiefly). And you can't write your own. And then this comes along – a Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall place shining out on a rainy night, a front-for-the-mob Polish restaurant where one pierogi is two is four, a Korean spot on the edge of Nova Scotia, like it might fall right into the ocean on a windy day. Unexpected salvation, a miracle to the tired and hungry, but not just any miracle, oh no. This is a miracle designed for and sent specifically to you. It is the right person, with the right materials and know-how, in comfortable charge. You don't know how to thank them without sounding like a lunatic in your profuseness.
