Summary
Merlin leaves him notes around the house—titbits of his day or some useless fact he found somewhere. Arthur keeps them, pins them to the fridge and to the cabinets and into his calendar, taking them out whenever he feels like it.
He writes back, too, and after months, sticky notes can be found in the most absurd places of their house. It makes Arthur smile so often, he fears his face might become stuck like that, after all.
With age, supposedly, comes wisdom. Arthur still needs the occasional reminder that Merlin makes everything more bearable.

He tugs lightly on Merlin’s leg, flashes him a smile. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to fall in love with you; pinkie promise and all, yeah?”
Merlin laughs, a short, incredulous sound. “Oh my god how are you so—you’re such a goddamn idiot, it's impossible.”
Arthur grins back, shrugs a little. “Hey, my charm works on a whooping number of three women and one guy, the latter unfortunate enough to call himself my best friend. What can I say? I’m a catch.”
Arthur has known for a while that he's bi. He's known for about as long that he finds Merlin attractive, too. They are friends though, and there are a hundred reasons why they cannot happen, no matter what Arthur otherwise thinks about it.
Alternatively: a beginning, a fuck-up, and some hard-won reconciliation, told over the course of four weddings and one funeral.
