"You’ll have the goodwill of all the hidden villages behind you.”
Kakashi shakes his head a little, eye settling on the far wall of the tent, staring at nothing. “After this? Maybe not.”
By this he means you, Obito knows, and hears the truth in it.
“Do you regret it?” he asks.
Kakashi says nothing for a long moment. When he turns to look at Obito head-on, Obito is staggered by the depth of emotion in that lone grey eye.
“Obito,” Kakashi begins, and his voice is just barely unsteady. “My life is made of regrets.”
He pauses, swallowing. Obito waits with his breath caught in his throat.
“But not this,” says Kakashi, and Obito couldn’t look away from his face if he tried. “Never this.”

And the fact remains that when eight years had passed and his mind told him to go home, Obito’s feet led him to Kakashi’s door, and he thinks he might be able to live with that, as well.

“I’m scared,” Obito presses on, determined not to lose his nerve, “because I love you, okay —”
— because I figured this out less than a week ago and now my heart doesn’t fit inside me anymore, and every single powerful person in the village knows that and is trying to decide what to do with it, and I don’t know what they’ll do to me and I don’t care because the only thing that matters is that nothing happens to you, and I would do anything, literally anything, I’d cut my own eyes out of my head if I thought it would keep you safe, don’t you understand, what if it isn’t enough, what if nothing is enough for them —
“Breathe, Obito,” Kakashi demands, and Obito pulls in the air he didn’t realize he was missing, and shakes.
“I love you,” he says, voice cracking, “and it’s the most terrifying feeling in the world.”
Vulnerability. He’s not used to it. He didn’t know he could feel like this, like someone scooped out his tender insides, gave them a human form and set them down in the bed across from him and said, if you lose this, nothing else means anything, anymore.
“So tell them that,” says Kakashi. He is watching Obito with astonishing intensity.
“… what?”
“Tell them how you feel,” Kakashi says. “You think Naruto, of all people, doesn’t know what love looks like? What it feels like?”
Naruto, with two parents who gave their lives for him, with a monster bonded to his soul that would do anything for him, with teammates and friends that would go through hell and back if he asked them to. Of course.
“Okay,” says Obito, and lays his hand over Kakashi’s own, watching the morning sunlight dapple their entwined fingers. “Okay.”

“Would you still do the same thing if you had to do it over? Even with what happened?”Even with what happened. He thinks of Rin. Of Madara. Of the horror in the now-adult Kakashi’s eyes when he realized what Obito had become.
But Kakashi is here, now, alive and well, telling tall tales to the village children in the midst of a world at peace. A world where Obito has a home, a place; where he is loved, and somehow has the capacity to love in return despite it all.
“I would,” he says finally, meeting Ayame’s gaze and feeling the future stretch out in front of them all, something tangible, something real. “Every time.”

Summary
The Fourth Hokage's body was never found, but they never suspected that was because he hadn't died.
Minato Namikaze wakes up six years after the devastating Kyuubi attack, alone in an overgrown clearing with not a scratch on him. Disoriented and confused, he does exactly what any father would do in this situation. He fights through the pain, gets up, and goes to find his son. He trudges through the pounding in his head and forces himself to move-- to go and find him, because that masked man was still out there, and Minato is willing to do anything to protect his little ball of sunshine.
Needless to say, the blonde kage wasn't expecting so much time to have passed. Nor is he very impressed with the way the village has been treating his son all these years.

His second thought is, it cannot possibly be heaven, for if there were truly any justice in the world, he would never be allowed inside.
"Nii-san!" comes the delighted shout, and a pair of skinny arms are wrapped around his middle, and Itachi is forced to re-evaluate his first theory, because there is no way, absolutely no way, that he deserves heaven and his brother in the same breath.

Itachi had always been the type of person who wanted to shape the world through love, rather than hate. He was a gentle person by nature, a kind one. He believed that if he loved enough, and if he loved correctly, everything could be changed, and for the better.
His hopes for that were shattered when he was thirteen years old. But he kept loving anyway.
He loved the village he had failed, the people he had let die, and the people who hated him and were happy to see him dead.
He loved the little brother who despised him.
He loved his parents, despite everything.
And it didn't fix anything, and the world didn't become a better place, and everything that was broken was still broken.
It was all meaningless.
But his love, at least, wasn't. -

Summary
Six years after Minato Namikaze rose from the dead, Naruto's graduated the academy with a field of flowers in his mind and the best friends he could've ever asked for. Everything seems like it's going well... until it's not. Conspiracies within the village are keeping Minato on his toes, and Naruto's goal of world peace only seems to get further and further away from him as the Akatsuki stir and start to raise their heads. There are unknown enemies lurking around every corner, and it's up to Naruto and Kurama to stop them-- and who knows, maybe they'll have a little help when they do.
(In the distance, the remnants of Uzu call, getting louder and louder each day. Naruto doesn't know what it means for him or for the rest of Team 7, but as the pull gets stronger and stronger, he has a feeling he's going to find out.)

Summary
Living in the woods after being kicked out of the orphanage, Naruto Uzumaki is faced with a slew of impossible to make choices when he finds a half-dead stranger with no eyes washed up on the bank of the river in front of his makeshift home. Knowing that whoever did this to The Stranger is still out there, and that nobody will believe him if he tries to get help, Naruto rolls up his sleeves and decides he's going to do it himself. Whoever this boy is, Naruto is going to save him. Even if he has to read a book to do it.
Healing doesn't come easy to someone with as much chakra as Naruto has, but never let it be said that he backs down from a challenge. He's going to do this, and who knows. Maybe he'll unravel one of Konoha's darkest and best kept secrets whilst he does.
Or: Naruto finds Shisui Uchiha half dead on the bank of a river and learns medical ninjutsu to save him. Now, if only Shisui could remember who hurt him to begin with.
