Summary
From somewhere to Buck’s left, a machine started beeping a new, insistent warning. Eddie didn’t need to look at the display to know what was wrong.
“His oxygen is dropping,” Dr. Becker stated tensely. “If he doesn’t take a breath in the next few seconds, we’re going to have to reconnect him to the ventilator.”
Eddie felt his blood run hot, then cold. Instincts that came from years of paramedic training screamed at him, urging him to rush to Buck’s side, reconnect his oxygen, save his life. It took every bit of his resolve to stay standing where he was, every muscle in his body rigid, fists jammed into his pockets, waiting, watching.
Buck’s doctor was standing right there. She knew what she was doing.
She wouldn’t let him die.

Or: after the lightning strike, Eddie is present when Buck is taken off life support.

Summary
“Did... did I die...?”
Karai didn't say a word, just kept looking at him with that sad, sad gaze, and that was all Leo needed to know. He sucked in a ragged breath. Dropping his gaze, he finally caught sight of his hands, still folded tightly in Karai's, and he thought he might be sick.
They were the same shade of ghostly teal as the woman that sat before him. What's more, he could see through them, down to the folds of Karai's translucent robe.
He was—that was it. He was really dead.

Or: the Hamatos save the world. Leo doesn’t make it out of the prison dimension alive.

“S- Sashy?” The old nickname slipped out before she could help it. She knew Sasha didn’t like to be called that anymore.
The other girl didn’t seem to mind, though. A smile broke out across her face.
“Yeah. It’s me,” she said softly. “You really gave us a scare, you know that? We weren’t sure — I thought I’d lost you again.”
~~~
Or, Marcy wakes up in Sasha's arms after the Core's defeat.
Summary
“Well, tattoos can look like almost anything.” Buck lifts his other arm to show Christopher the null sign on his inner elbow. “Your dad’s is script– uh, words, like this one–” he twists to display the quote on the outside of his forearm. “But I have some that are just shapes.”
Chris nods at this thoughtfully. “Can you color them?”
Buck grins. “You can get them in color, yeah. But all of mine are black.”
Chris glances at his markers, then back at Buck’s arm. “Can I color them?”
And, well. They’re just Crayolas.
Summary
“He told me he loved me.” Buck’s voice was quiet, fragile. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out the sting that came with the memory. “I didn’t say it back.”
He let out a shaky breath, rubbing his face with both hands, his chest heaving. The pain, the grief—it had never left him, but now it was raw, it was real, and it was breaking through everything he had tried to hold back.
“I didn’t say it, Eddie,” he whispered, voice cracking. “I didn’t… I didn’t even say it. And now he’s gone.”
OR
After a rescue mission ends in collapse, Buck and Eddie find themselves trapped with no radio, no way out, and too much unsaid between them. In the quiet between disasters, they’ll finally face what’s always been there. Post-8x17.
Summary
Eddie has to stop Chris from sneaking food to the dog during dinner. “I know the meatballs aren’t your favorite,” he says tiredly. “But they have garlic in them, which isn’t good for the dog.”
Chris stops immediately, to his credit. “Sorry,” he says, and leans down to performatively whisper to the dog, “You’re not missing much anyway.”
“Hey,” Eddie says, with no heat. “I know they aren’t as good as --” He catches himself.
Chris wilts in his chair. “Sorry,” he mumbles again, and Eddie hates himself so much that for a second, he can’t breathe.
“Hen brought treats we can give the dog after dinner,” he tries instead, and Ladder Truck Dog’s ears prick up at the sound of words he recognizes, which at least makes Chris smile, just a little.
.
Buck goes missing. The 118 gets a dog. These two facts are unrelated, right?
