“No. No, Hollander,” Ilya coughed, eyes flitting around the room. “Is just– Is too much.”
“This is… too much?” Shane repeated slowly, incredulously. “We see each other maybe once a month. Less, even.”
“No. Is not that– You are just,” Ilya swore under his breath in Russian. His accent was getting thicker, the words clunkier, in the way it always got stronger when he was frustrated or tired. Shane hated himself for recognizing it. “...too much.”
OR
In the Heated Rivalry book, Ilya intends to break things off with Shane the night of the All-Star Game, but then Shane gets hurt. What if Shane never gets injured by Marlow, and Ilya really does break things off?
(Basically, a shit ton of angst and Shane Hollander learning to love himself. There will be a happy ending!)

Irina always waits for him on the top step of the staircase at the dacha.
She is wearing a dark blue dress with long sleeves (the one she was buried in), gold earrings, a baptismal cross on a chain, and her wedding ring. Her feet — as always at the dacha — are bare, and for some reason it is precisely them that he remembers most vividly: Irina’s legs are strong, beautiful legs — the legs of a skier, an athlete, a restless mother of two sons.
He always thinks that Irina is waiting for him. This is the natural order of things. The husband is the provider, the wife the keeper of the hearth. He earns money every day; she makes sure he has the strength to do so. A firm, unquestionable routine they have been working at for years, since the very beginning of their marriage. He knows Irina can be lazy, but he is certain that with proper attention and patience this can someday be amended.
When dementia gnaws at Grigory Rozanov’s brain until nothing remains but its honest bare core, he wakes up in the middle of the night, struck by a sudden thought sharp as a migraine.
Irina is not waiting for him. Irina is waiting for death.
