“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

"I'm not afraid of death," Mike says immediately, opening his tear-filled eyes. "I mean, I don't want to die," he immediately corrects. "I just don't want to leave you, you know? I'm so afraid of losing you, but the worst thing would be if I left you. Alone."
Will sniffles. He exhales shakily and gently tucks the boy's hair behind his ears.
"I'll always be with you," Will says, pressing a kiss to Mike's wet cheekbone. "And you'll always be with me." He turns Mike's face and kisses his other cheek, and Mike pouts, realizing his kissing direction is about to change. But Will pulls back and looks into his eyes. "We swore, remember?"
or
Mike returns from a hike with a cursed mark that drives Will crazy with worry, and then reveals the true purpose of the route change.

Summary
“You never said anything?” Michael whispers. He knows the answer before Will even speaks.
“How could I? What difference would it have made?”
All the difference in the world, Michael thinks, but he understands that isn’t what Will means. The watchful eyes of Michael’s order and of the gods would have made it impossible for anything beyond the lines of camaraderie to flourish between them.
In the dark stairwell, pressing up against the wall and away from beam of silvery moonlight, Michael leans his head down to the delicate shell of Will’s ear and whispers:
“The eyes don’t reach here, do they?”

I think about finding you on the swings in the first grade. I think about the first time Jonathan showed us the DnD board game, and how excited you were to see all the magic stuff. How I kept giving you different characters to draw just to watch the way your eyes lit up. Was I in love with you then?
I remember stealing a tape of The Thing from Nancy and watching it when we were ten. I remember being so scared, but you were fascinated. I stuck it out just to watch you gasp when MacReady blows up the station. I remember grabbing your hand when it happened, and you held on. Was I in love with you then?
I remember the last words you said to me before you went missing. It was a seven. I remember when you came back, when I finally saw you again, and I thought my heart was going to stop. I swear to God, Will, it was like I could breathe again for the first time in days.
Mike and Will get through Vecna, get through a million almost-confessions and even more death scares. Then, three months later, Will finds a box of unsent letters from freshman year under Mike's bed.
