And that was the whole, Robby-sized problem of it: that Jack would let him have anything, really, if he asked nicely enough.

He’s an anomaly, Michael Robinavitch; objectively, he is a manwhore terrorising the female population of Pittsburgh, (and a single, widowed, vet amputee, but admittedly Jack brought this on himself— God help the women, who probably had well-meaning but completely delusional fantasies of being the gal to fix Robby; Jack never even entertained the idea, nor did he promise it, or ask it of Robby; he went into this whole fucked mess with his eyes wide open, and now they were wider still, because he didn’t want to miss a fucking minute of it.

You could disarm him, the voice in his head says. You could take him down in two seconds flat. Yes, he’s taller and you’re caught off guard without the boot but remember your training. It was the first thing you asked for after the surgery, hand-to-hand, a thousand ways to kill a man without your foot and you aced it. You teach it at the Y, for fucks sake. You know him, he will back off.
Or, he thinks, as Robby huffs again, this time against his mouth, and kisses him, soft and dry. Or I could see where this goes.

Robby loves Jack, and even though Jack doesn't feel the same way, Robby would do anything for him. So when Jack needs someone he trusts to Dom for him, it's not like Robby's going to say no, is it?
Pining idiots, herculean strength self-denial, and a surplus of mushy feelings.

Summary
They aren’t his family, not in the traditional sense. But the idea that they might be, that they could be, unsettles him more than he wants to admit. It’s the same quiet dread that hit him when Collins said he had helped raise Amy. He doesn’t know why exactly. Maybe because imagining them as a family implies imagining him and Jack as something. And that’s just absurd, right?
Or: Robby has been a quiet constant in the lives of Abbot and his daughter, filling a space that was never clearly named. As they drift into their fifties, he begins to recognize that his feelings for Jack may have deepened into something real and perhaps impossible. Now he’s left wondering if this almost-family could ever truly be his.

So he pivots, grabbing at the first safe topic in reach. “Look, your dad has this annoying habit of caring too much and pretending he doesn’t. That’s just one more item on the long list of his weird personality traits.”
She frowns, thoughtful. “It is weird, right?”
“Extremely,” he says.
“So you get why I didn’t tell him.”
“I told you I do. Completely. But let’s be real, you’re going to make that man bald. You realize his hair wasn’t even that gray until you hit eleven, right?”
Her face contorts into mock horror. “Oh my God. He can’t go bald. That’s—ugh—so embarrassing. I mean, no offense.”
Robby stares at her, deadpan. “None taken. I love being casually insulted over an expensive dinner I’m paying for.” -

“And this is Svetlana! You guys have a fun hockey connection. She’s BFFs with—ooh. What’s his name again, babe?”
“Ilya Rozanov,” says Svetlana. Feeling virtuous about it, she offers her hand first. “Don’t tell him I said you have the best hands in the league.”
Shane’s face is rigid. “Um. I won’t?”
“Thank you,” she says gravely. “You have saved a life.” Rose laughs, stroking Shane’s arm, and he suddenly remembers Svetlana’s hand is hanging. He takes it limply and disposes of it quick. His eyes look a little wild.

She starts to entertain the idea that Shane is a homophobe, but he seems to withstand Miles’ flirtation fine, and even asks a follow-up about Miles’ latest underwear modelling gig. Frankly, it doesn’t appear as though he possesses the kind of gaydar to anticipate that Sabrina and Svetlana will, in about an hour or so, be using the bathroom to snort coke off each others’ tits.

Kip barks a laugh. Fuck it, this dude seems down to clown. "More like he thinks you're a rat-fuck showboater who could stand to have his jaw broken once or twice. His words, not mine."
Rozanov, because hockey players are insane, seems to take this as a heartfelt compliment. "That sounds right. I like rat-fuck, you know, it carries respect. My friend's father, he likes to say I am scallywag, this is not respect. Anyway, I never liked Hunter so much - he is fossil, slave to conformist strategy, stagnant play, no risk - or, was," he corrects himself with a small gesture at Kip's general presence. "Now he makes league history by getting some on the ice, what can I say? Fuck this guy, keeps finding new ways to make rest of us look bad." -

Summary
“I care not for procreation,” the creature rumbles angrily from above, spitting out the word as if in mockery of the way Victor had intoned it prior. “I am not entreating you to make me… a child-bearing wife. Just a friend.”
Or, when Victor makes his assumptions about the nature of the Creature's request for a companion, instead of remaining silent, the Creature speaks up. This puts their first confrontation after the fire on a different path.

Victor breathes heavily underneath the grip that restrains him. He takes one look within the mirror to discern the presence crushing him; the behemoth he’s built, a thing of innocence now turned unholy predator towards the one who made him. Victor’s pride thrashes adamantly within him, yet when he gazes upon the demon’s countenance he despairs.
This is for the sake of survival. There is no other choice that does not end with him broken and bleeding on the floor. -

Nai doesn’t know what dumpster Vash pulled Nicholas out of, but his intentions seem perfectly clear. Nai can’t fucking stand the song and dance, where these people pretend to give a shit about Vash even though they only want one thing. And Vash can be far too accommodating—Nai’s mind conjures horror scenarios of Nicholas hanging around their apartment in his underwear, grabbing Nai’s last batch of overnight oats from the fridge.
He has to make sure that doesn’t happen. -

“What’s a guy like you doing in a place like this?” Clint says, instead.
Barnes snorts. “Having a drink,” he says, then gives Clint another one of those appraising looks. “You a professional?” he says, after a second, and Clint is momentarily confused.
A professional what?
And then he realizes Barnes must be talking about pool, and Clint huffs a laugh. “Only when there’s money involved,” he says, smirking, and Barnes kind of nods, like that makes any sort of sense.
Then Barnes nods again, a little more firmly, and says “You got a place?”
Which is about the point that Clint realizes that he’s not meeting the Winter Soldier in a bar, he’s being picked up by the Winter Soldier in a bar and-
“Yeah,” he croaks, clears his throat, thinks wildly that he’s really fucking glad Kate has Lucky for a few days, and says “Yeah, I got a place.”

He’s nursing his second beer when the Winter Soldier walks through the entrance.
It’s like one of those weird jokes. ‘A soldier, an assassin, and a superhero all walk into a bar’ except there’s no punchline because they’re all the same guy. Or maybe that’s the punchline, who knows. Either way Bucky fucking Barnes walks into Clint’s favorite dive bar on a Thursday night and he’s even prettier in person than he is on the news. -

She stepped aside, and he brushed past her. The metal door hit the steel frame violently as it closed behind him. Through the rusty grates she watched him cross the back parking lot. The heavy rain continued to come down in sheets, broken only by his hunched silhouette. He veered to the left and disappeared down an unlit alley.

“How many times have we had this conversation?” Logan asks, rubbing a hand over his eyes.
Too fucking many, Wade thinks. The table is cool against his skin, and the fork embedded in his hand throbs with a pulsing heat. He thinks he might just stay here for a while, see how the universe kills him like this. Knowing his luck, someone would walk right up and take Logan’s head off, and then he’d have to watch him die, again.

“It could be overheating,” Buck ducks his head back down.
He’s sitting a good six feet away, on the ledge of a step up to the front door, while Eddie works in the driveway, because he’d asked Buck to join him but Buck couldn’t really join him. Because if his dad had ever thought teaching Buck about cars would’ve been a fun activity, it wouldn’t have mattered the second Eddie walked out, flipped up the hood, and looked like that.
Buck’s mind went blissfully, cruelly blank. He’s trying to actively refill it.
Idiot lights. Invented in 1930 by the Hudson Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan to alert drivers to major engine issues. Not to be confused with the check engine light that replaced it later, which could alert drivers to a whole array of problems, (thirteen common ones, Buck has learned,) using a computerized control system.
Idiot light feels fitting though, because Buck truly can’t remember why he agreed to this in the first place. It’s idiotic. Catastrophic. He needs to get a grip before he starts sounding even more like a Grease lyric.
“You haven’t turned it on for three days now,” Eddie tuts, “It’s definitely not overheating.”
Well, that’s good for the Jeep. Buck simply cannot relate. -

"I think we should go clubbing again," Buck announces in between Forza races. "We have a Friday in the middle of our 96, it would be perfect."
"You guys planning something?" Hen asks, coming over from the kitchen with a bowl of trail mix.
"I'm trying to get Eddie to come pick up guys with me," Buck says.
Hen's eyebrows arch high above her glasses. "Really," Hen says.
"It's more of a wingman situation," Eddie tries to explain.
"Yeah, Eddie picks the guys so I don't make stupid decisions," Buck says, flicking through menus to pick a new racetrack.
The combination of Hen munching peanuts and looking back and forth between them makes Eddie feel like he's a zoo exhibit. Best Friends, captured in the wild, still feral, exhibiting behaviors heretofore unknown to science.
"Well, good luck with - all that," Hen says pointedly to Eddie. She is definitely not talking about the video game.

For just a moment, everything that’s been weighing on Eddie recedes, like he’s coming out of dark water into a shallow pool warmed by the sun. Christopher is here, and Buck, and they’re together and safe and nothing more complicated than deciding whether to get ice cream is going to happen today.
He knows it won’t last, feels it fading as quickly as it came, the guilt and uncertainty and fear catching at him, pulling him back under. But for those few seconds, an instant that Eddie wants to trap under glass and stay in forever, they’re all laughing in the sunshine, and Buck’s smile is beautiful and Eddie is perfectly content. -

“I’m not regretting breaking up with Taylor,” Buck says. “It just… would have been nice to go with someone, is all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely over Ali, and I’m happy for her and everything, but…”
“But you also want to show that she’s not the only one who could move on,” Eddie says.
And yeah. That’s pretty much right on the money. Always Eddie, to see him, ugliness and all. It’s a shit thought to have, because the last person Ali Martin’s big day is about is him, but—
Well, but. He’s thirty-one and in love with his best friend, who is decidedly not in love with him. He thinks he’s earned the right to be a little uncharitable.
Then Eddie says, very casually, “Just take me.”
Or, Buck gets invited to an ex’s wedding. Eddie volunteers to come as his date.

Bookmarker's Notes
He's reminded, at once, of one of the 118 picnics, where Bobby brought out a grill and he and Michael made everyone burgers with a jalapeño relish that Buck still dreams about to this day. (Bobby also refuses to give him the recipe, citing Nash family secrets; Buck’s currently got May in on a long con to get it out of him.) Anyway, Hen and Karen had been there too, and Buck remembers seeing them across Bobby and Athena’s yard, sat on deck chairs talking to Maddie. Hen’s arm was around Karen’s shoulders, and Karen’s hand on her leg; there was a plate balanced on both of their knees, and Buck had watched as they kept holding each other, just used their free hands to cut up their burger into bite-sized pieces for their new little foster Chloe, Hen with the fork and Karen with the knife like a cutlery tag-team.
He’d thought about it a lot, especially before he and Taylor broke up, when she’d take him to events and joke at the table to her friends how all he was good for was against-the-wall sex. She wouldn’t hold his hand at the table, but sometimes she’d trace her foot up his calf underneath it if she was feeling frisky. He thinks about it even more now that they’re no longer together. He wonders when someone will love him enough not to let go of his hand.
For now, he stays holding Eddie’s, holding the programme, and pretends he means it.
