Ostensibly, sleeping together will help with tomorrow’s Drift compatibility test—their minds will be clear, their focuses sharp, and all extraneous feelings and thoughts swept away. All the better for the neural handshake to be successful, which is really all that matters, both to them and the higher ups hoping to get the Jaeger Hermanubis back on the active roster.
But if Cyno were honest, it’s not about the compatibility test at all.
He just can’t take the anticipation anymore.

Alhaitham starts shrugging off his jacket.
“What are you doing?” Cyno says.
“We haven’t exhausted all of our options in Sumeru just yet.” Alhaitham tugs off his boots and places them near his abandoned jacket. He takes a polearm of his own, then meets Cyno in the middle of the padded training mat.
Cyno has never seen Alhaitham in anything but full uniform. Without the jacket, he wears a fitted black top, sleeveless. The muscles of his arms flex as he adjusts his grip around his polearm. His form is one long, lithe line—he doesn’t look like someone who sits at a desk all day.
Cyno needs a copilot. Alhaitham helps.

At the celebration feast, Nilou asked Cyno if he would be happy continuing to be the General Mahamatra.
Cyno said, “It’s not about being happy. There are merely a lot of things that I must do.”
Alhaitham can’t say for certain why Cyno’s words bothered him. In a way, the sentiment is unsurprising; Cyno is, after all, dutiful to a fault. It makes sense that he puts his work over himself. Even so, Alhaitham wonders what the shape of Cyno’s happiness would be, if he allowed it to take form. If he ever allowed someone like Alhaitham to witness it.
Which he certainly never would.
Or: In the midst of the Akademiya’s rebuilding, Nahida sends her closest advisors on a trip through Sumeru.

Some glowing embers from the fire remained, providing the barest of light sources. Just enough for him to get a sense of his surroundings, and for him to see—
