All Marinette wanted to do was buy some dishes and twinkle lights.
Instead, she got wrapped up in an all-out game of hide-and-seek between four of the most well-trained vigilantes in the world. Involving Home Alone-esque traps, crushed forklifts, a surprising amount of shoplifting considering they're the good guys, and the beginnings of an epic bond with a smirking, laser wielding, maniac.
Not that she knew that at the time. All she saw was a cute guy hiding behind a desk, and the rest was history.

It wasn’t even a terrible day, just uneventful and filled with inconveniences all stacked on top of each other. Jax gripped his phone, the screen cracked and his stupid, angry reflection stared back at him and he fought against breaking it because everything was fine, when a voice cut through the rain.
“Excuse me, do you know which train’s heading Downtown?”
Jax’s fingers twitched.
He stared down at a pair of blue and red eyes blinking up at him nervously. Small, white, and accidentally dripping a steady stream of rain down his pants through a worn–down black umbrella held over her head.
His mouth felt heavy. “Northbound,” he murmured, and jabbed his thumb over his shoulder to get the point across.
She gave him a small smile. “Oh, okay,” she said, and then, “t-thanks.”
His grip tightened, watching her walk away from him and grow more and more blurry as the rain thickened. There was no fanfare or lingering feeling of disgust down his throat. The train arrived and Jax wondered if she managed to find a good seat or not.
He hoped to never see her again.

Owen had been drunk enough to be pleasantly swimming, eyes blinking languidly— he wasn’t going to turn down free wine, especially from the Goldsmith cellars. But at the sight of Pyro crawling into Scott’s lap with no sense of propriety, he had sat straight and cold and sober, heat rushing to his bloodless face and fingers tightening on his goblet.
Scott had looked… smug, was the only word for it, pulling Pyro’s head down to rest against his shoulder, and indulgently bringing his hand up to run through his fledglings dark hair. Owen found his eyes drawn helplessly to the motion, fingers cold and stiff where they were clenched on the goblet and the table surface, pupils dilated in the dim candle flicker light of the formerly grand banquet hall. Scott had made eye contact with him, his smile slow and sharp. A bare flicker of pointed white teeth flashed on his bottom lip as Pyro let out a content sigh and relaxed, half on Scott’s lap, and half tucked onto the grand chair Scott had positioned at the head of the table.

“Can’t,” Zuko grunted out, just as Katara pushed the cold compress closer. “Father says that if – if it’s my fault, I have to fix it myself. Asking for handouts after a tantrum is dishonorable.”
He’d said as much before, when the worst thing he’d shown up with was enough cuts on his knees to border the wrong edge of questionable. Sokka had never thought twice about the explanation. He knew that Toph’s parents had cut her off from time to time. Rich kid problems at their finest.
This time, though, Sokka took a good, hard look at the burns on Zuko’s arm. And he did something he’d never done before: he asked follow-up questions.
“How’d you get that burn, Zuko?”
Or, Zuko's made a habit of texting Sokka when he needs to be patched up. But when said patching up only ever happens in the middle of the night when his dads aren't home, there's only so much Sokka is willing to not question for the sake of someone he doesn't even know that well.
