It was a good plan in theory. He didn’t have enough magical reserves to teleport home, and without the shortcut, Gale wouldn't arrive back at his tower until well past midnight. In theory, it was just a quick jaunt through Waterdeep’s largest cemetery on the one night the Veil to the Afterlife was the thinnest.
Professor Gale walks home for the Blackstaff Halloween party. He's followed by someone who finds him delicious.

“Now, now this is just a misunderstanding, sir,” the man tried to smooth things over, desperate now that he was being called out by more than one person. “This gentleman just isn’t happy with the price is all. No scams here, I can assure you.”
The newcomer moved to Astarion’s side, regarding both of the pieces in Astarion’s hands through thick-framed glasses. He took in the discolored glue, bent corners, and the offending cloak before shaking his head.
“This gentleman is correct, my friend,” he said, adjusting his glasses. “These pieces are in no position to sell as ‘Like New’ or ‘MIB. Ha, you call this Mint in Box with the paint chipping on the face?’ It looks as if someone put too much blush on the ‘Lady of Loss’ herself.”

Gale Dekarios leaves him notes on the fridge with a list of tasks to do and that he’s upstairs if Astarion has any questions. He knows he is real and he’s not just hallucinating: he’s seen far too many empty coffee pots and can constantly hear him moving around.

“Your undead life?” Gale tilted his head like a confused puppy. “Did you think the whole vampire thing was a secret?”
“Well. kind of?”
Gale laughed in earnest. “Astarion, I know you can’t see yourself but you have to understand what you look like. You look like whatever an emo kid imagines when they picture themselves grown up, with your perfect hair, eyeliner, and the leather jacket thing.”
“I-”
“Also if the ethereal beauty wasn't enough, you have a blood flask in your jacket pocket at all times.”
Astarion blinked, but quickly gained his composure, a damn near predatory grin stretching across his lips, highlighted by the fact that he was no longer hiding his fangs. “So you think I'm beautiful, wizard boy?”
Gale rolled his eyes, trying to keep the flush off his cheeks. “Of course I do, Astarion.”

That’s all they could see when they opened their eyes.
They were cold, and they couldn’t breathe. A burn spread through their lungs and they had to get out-out-out!
Purple claws broke through the dirt as they hauled themselves up and out of the near frozen ground.
The trees, scattered around them, were covered in snow. Behind them, a coat of colors they didn’t have the names for yet hung from a wooden stake in the ground. Though they didn’t know why, something in their mind pushed them to take it down. They shrugged it on and noticed it was warm, even with the cold wind whipping around them. A sense of familiarity flooded their senses, but they couldn’t tell why.
They couldn’t remember anything. Not their name, not their race, not their job or their hair color or their eye color.
They had no memories, not of friends, not of family.
They were empty.

Caleb groaned as the skies opened up, drenching him, his clothes, and his bag.
It was his own fault, really. He knew it was going to rain, but he turned down the ride offers from Beau, Fjord, and Nila. His old car finally croaked, but the library wasn’t that far from his flat, so he thought he could make it home before the rain.
He was wrong, of course.
He debated over his options.
First, he could continue his walk home. It was ten minutes at most.
Or, he could duck into the extremely inviting tea shop, where someone will hopefully give him something warm to drink even though he would track water in with him.
The rain seemed to get heavier the longer he thought, so Caleb stopped thinking and rushed into the ‘Blooming Grove Café.’
