Ikumi slams on the breaks, sending everything in the back seats tumbling to the floor. She rolls down the window, leaning out to see Ichigo squinting through her headlights.
“Oi!” she calls to him. “What the hell happened?
Ichigo’s panting heavily, leaning over with his hands on his knees. He doesn’t answer, but when he looks up, his face is thrown into harsh relief by the fluorescents. It’s an expression Ikumi’s never seen on anyone younger than forty.

“Rex…?” The name barely escapes Shulk’s mouth. Rex smiles weakly, though it seems to pain him. Shulk, for the first time, notices the smear of red covering his eye, so dark it nearly shines black. There’s an odd divot where his eye should be. “You’re hurt…”
