You want to be a good girlfriend.” He cups Shane’s jaw in his hand, strokes his cheekbone gently with his thumb. “You are already doing very good job. Perfect Miss Rozanova.”

Shane stares at the fabric in his hands and takes a deep breath. He’ll never hear the fucking end of it if he wears this thing out. He’ll never hear the end of it if he doesn’t.
Lose-lose, really.
A whoop sounds out behind him as Shane slips the jersey over his head. It sits awkwardly, though he can’t tell if that’s because the material is brand new or because his body won’t relax. It’s hot, as if the fabric lettering on the back is branding his skin. As if he’ll take off the jersey and be marked for life:

Hayden heard her ask if Shane had someone there, and Shane sounded maudlin and wasted as he said, “I’ve been in a situationship for five and a half years. If I could have one wish in the whole wide world, my situationship would be here. Situationships don’t come to after-parties, they just leave you feeling broken and sad and… We won the Cup.”
Shane never, ever acknowledged that “Boston Lily” was as much as a friend, let alone a situationship… and five and a half years… that was back before rookie year. That was before the draft.

Shane didn’t know what possessed him to do it, he honestly didn’t. If you asked him, he wouldn’t have been able to answer you. And yet, he’d done it. He’d done it and now he was feeling stupid.
He was going through Ilya’s tagged posts on Instagram.
It wasn’t bad. It shouldn’t have been bad, really. Most of it was just team stuff, him out with teammates or him on the ice. There were some things about their rivalry, things with them facing off against each other, various things that highlighted them. The occasional throwback to the starts of their careers, them as rookies, their first games. Seeing the stuff from him at the Winter Olympics had been a fun one, actually, seeing him on the ice in his home country for his home team, even if it was stained with not so great memories.
But there was the occasional photo. A news article of him being seen out with another woman. Something of him being seen leaving an event in one of his cars, someone in the passenger seat that obviously wasn’t Shane. Photos at a nightclub with his arms around another woman. Him at a bar, another woman beside him. Another woman. Another woman. Another woman.
Not Shane.

“What did I,” his throat clicks, swallowing harshly around the tears that he has refused to allow and fall. “What did I do wrong?”
Mortification feels like fingers wrapped tightly around his throat, tucking himself closely against the wall and too afraid to even look Rozanov in the eye. There’s a long beat of silence where Shane can practically feel his heart climb into his mouth, his chest aching with a relentless thud.
“Hollander.” He can’t read Rozanov’s tone even on his better days, quiet and short of breath.
Shane wishes that he could dissolve into the floorboards, eyes squeezed shut and a spike of shuddering cold working its way through him.
Or, Shane drops hard and fast after their hook-up in Vegas. Ilya takes care of him.
