Summary
Sprawled out on the hard floor of the Verdigris House, head resting in Maomao's lap, is the best sleep Jinshi's had in months. For once, he doesn't dream. Just floats through the darkness, lulled by the smell of bitter herbs and disinfectant. Her smell.
When he wakes, squinting in the late afternoon light, he's shocked to find that Maomao hasn't moved an inch. He turns his head in her lap.

Master Jinshi.
He's above her, face close enough that their noses nearly touch. Maomao turns and sees one hand braced beside her on the ground — no, not the ground. They're not in the cave again; instead, she's lying on a plush bed surrounded by pillows and blankets. Fit for royalty. She shakes her head, unwilling to make any assumptions even in this state, and comes face to face with Jinshi again.
