Etho would back me up, and it’s not like they could extend our contracts–
If there’s asteroid beasts, I’m staying right in my pilot’s seat where I can flee them in style, Grian had retorted.
No, no, only good things here, Scar had protested, the reports of beasts have been greatly exaggerated, and you know, we have algae, we all like algae, we’re all about eating your greens–
Scar had aimed for Grian’s center of mass. His stunner had been set one level below lethal. If it had hit where he was aiming, Grian would’ve had worse heart palpitations than this, bordering on deadly. Trouble breathing.
Certainly trouble escaping.

“Hello there!” Charles greets amicably. “Come on in, we don't bite! Unless you ask nicely, of course.”
Thomas doesn't need to look away from the girl to know Charles has thrown in a cheeky little wink for good measure.
“What's your business here?” Thomas asks, always having far less patience for bullshit than his partner in supernatural crime.
Charles nudges him lightly with his elbow in reprimand, but the girl doesn't seem particularly bothered. “You guys are, like, the supernatural hitmen everyone's been talking about, right?”
The pair exchanges a brief but meaningful look. “That'd be us! I'm Charles Rowland, and he's Thomas King. We’re the Dead Dude Vigilantes.”
She looks them up and down with a keen, appraising gaze. “I'm Crystal, psychic medium. Cool name.”

There, they meet the Forest King, a shape-shifting magical being who turns everything they thought they knew about themselves and each other on its head.

A chilling little story, to be sure, and a concerning one to have slunk its way to their doorstep, but Edwin wasn’t overly worried about it.
After all, the Wizard King only ate the hearts of the pretty ones.
He was Edwin Payne of Payne & Sons Bespoke Tailoring; he was always and only of Payne & Sons. Such was his station in life, a role he himself was tailor-made for. A role he fit like a drab but finely-crafted glove. And so it went—until the day a wizard and a witch conspired to turn his tidy little life upside down.

Summary

What should have been a simple salt-and-burn gets sticky when the head of the theft ring they've conned their way into turns out to be on the FBI payroll. With Sam stuck in custody Dean calls in Castiel, hoping some angel mojo might lead to a quick escape and Cas quickly finds enough bubbling beneath the surface to attract his attention - like hellhounds prowling the halls of FBI headquarters. Sam also finds the day full of surprises: when Agent Burke starts the interrogation the only questions he has involve a thick file all about Sam and Dean, a fire in a Colorado police precinct and how Victor Hendrickson really died.
Neal knows he should have slipped his tracker and run off days ago, when he first heard the howls. Now he's scrambling to keep his old crossroads mistake from bringing everyone down with him, and it's not long before Peter, Dean, Sam, Cas, Jones and Diana all find themselves caught in the web, and Elizabeth finds herself with a choice: rejoin the family she's left behind or save the one she's built.
When hellhounds come baying for blood, even angels have nowhere to hide.

He did what it took to stay alive. He didn’t know how long it had been.
Techno tried to get his breath back, blood with that fae iridescence running down the blade of his silver sword.
The king smiled at him, a warm expression under eyes that never stopped calculating. He was wearing Techno’s father’s face again, which he seemed to like doing. “Well done,” the person who looked like Phil said, placing a hand on the side of Techno’s face. He tipped it upwards, forcing Techno to look at him. Techno could feel cold rings and the prick of claws against his skin, claws like it seemed most people had here. When Techno had woken up in the tithes’ bower this morning, his nails had come to a point. “You’re becoming a valued member of the court, like I knew you would,” the king told him. “You fit in so well.”
OR: Techno has been taken by the Forest King, and his dad comes for him.

On either side of you is corn, completely obscuring any sort of view that might help you figure a way out of the maze you’ve found yourself in. Slowly, you make another turn, not even bothering with the blinkers since no one but the stars and the moon are here to witness your transgressions against the law. The dirt road seems to stretch on, and even though you have your brights on, it looks to continue for its own particular eternity. You feel like you’ve been on it forever, and again, you find another dead end dipping into a black pit of still water. Letting out an angry huff of breath, you switch the gears and reverse back to the nearest intersection.
