Sometimes, the Admiralty gives stupid orders. Sometimes, Kirk really wants to tell the Admiralty exactly where they can shove the aforementioned stupid orders. Sometimes, it’s worth it – especially when people’s lives depend on it.
Sometimes, Kirk fails to remember that his crew trusts and supports him, always. Fortunately, they don’t mind giving him a few reminders.

Summary
“Leonard?” Spock called out. He sounded frail.
McCoy looked at him. The poor man just seemed so tired, so worn down. Whereas McCoy defaulted to anger when he was grieving, Spock was so given to denial that he refused to even visit the place in the cemetery where Jim’s body should have been. They had a bond, Leonard and Spock. A deep one. He could sense the hole in Spock’s heart, a pain he knew would never cease. Not just because Jim was gone, but because of all the words left unspoken. He did what he could, of course, distracting him, being a clown, getting up to mischief, engaging him in banter.
But right now in particular, it was bad. It was real bad. He never should've dragged Spock out for the launch.
“It’s nothing, Spock,” McCoy told him. “Just my mind playing tricks on me, that’s all.”
“Pardon,” a female voice said from behind him. “I believe I would be the nothing you’re looking for.”

After the launch of the Enterprise-D, Bones travels back in time to mend James Kirk's broken heart, and falls in love with Spock all over again. Set after Kirk's accident as depicted in Generations, but Kirk is back in chapter 2.

He rolled onto his side, every movement causing a deep pulse in his head and a sharp pain in his left lumbar region. Eventually he had rolled over enough to get his arms underneath himself and he started to push himself up.
“Uunghh!” He cried out in anguish, falling back onto his forearms and pressing his forehead against the ground. His mind was blank, filled with nothing but pain that became more intense as he tried to remember… well… anything.
My name is Spock.
I am a vulcan.
My t’hy’la, Jim, is out there.
I fell from the sky.
