    So let me get this straight: they activated HAL 9000 in Urbana in 1992, left him on continuously for nine full years, then somehow transferred him to a space rocket and blasted him into outer space, all without ever once either powering him off or even explaining to him what being powered off was like (i.e. completely painless and non-fatal)?

    Sure. Okay. This story explores an alternate universe where something less stupid happened.
