Things have been a living nightmare since the Hells left Bassuras, and Ashton just made the mistake of inviting more nightmares into their own head. Sure, Imogen and Letters were only trying to help, but Ashton's stuck with a nosebleed, a dead friend, and a sprig of lavender, which smells terrible.
Somehow, they end up talking it through with Orym. It's like a whole list of shit Ashton isn't good at: comforting people, dealing with others' trauma, confronting their own anxieties, being honest about their feelings? Fucking awful.
You know what they are good at? Mouth stuff. They should just do that instead.

And with years of practicing its opposite, she let her courage atrophy. Oh sure, she had a false type of courage when it came to Imogen or the rest of the Bells Hells. She could summon something very like courage when it was in service of others. But now Imogen didn’t want her or need her, and Laudna was scared.
