    Shane turns bright red, his freckles showing up as lighter pink specks against the dusky color of his cheeks. “It’s not like… I haven’t been… I don’t have a crush on you or anything!” 
    “Why not?” Hayden demands, too shocked to filter his words. “We’re best friends! I’d have a crush on you if I was gay!” 
    Shane gapes up at him. Jackie puts her hand over her mouth, her eyes dancing. Hayden realizes, far too late, how that must have sounded. 
    Well, at this point, it’s too late for him to do anything other than lean into it, right? He folds his arms across his chest. “I mean, jeez, man, am I not hot enough for you?” 

    Hayden Pike has a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. And then, just to make it worse, Ilya Rozanov shows up.

    “What’s your name, Rebel?” the girl asks through her teeth.

    How to answer that? Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi, nephew to Owen and Beru Lars… and son of Darth Vader. He draws himself up to his full height and prepares to die. “I’m just one of many,” he says. “When I die, the movement will live on after me.”

    The girl narrows her eyes. “Your movement can go rot,” she says. “You’re not going to tell me your name? Fine. Second question. What the hell have you done with Anakin Skywalker?”

    Or - Luke Skywalker, hero of the Rebel Alliance, minutes after learning his true parentage, wakes up in a strange place, full of strange people. Ahsoka's mission, meanwhile, has just gone up in flames after a pro-Separatist rebellion kidnaps Anakin as part of a gambit to negotiate an end to their planet's civil war. Misunderstandings ensue.

    Summary

    The best way to describe this work, I think, is as a novelization of the television series told from Ilya Rozanov's point of view. What happens in the series will happen, more or less, in this work.

    Please note, I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels and this is a written story, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. That means that where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.

    This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Ilya's point of view.

    Ilya Rozanov has seen the tape on Hollander, seen his blazing speed and his quick hands, his almost psychic ability to know where the puck will be. Hollander is a magician on the ice, the best prospect in the world except for Ilya himself.

    But up close, Hollander looks young. Soft. Western. He has big eyes and freckles across his nose like a little kid. He is attractive in the way that many young men are attractive, his face not yet hardened by the work of the real world, and he seems nervous to be out here, nervous to be seen with Ilya. Because Ilya has been forced to learn everything about Hollander, Ilya knows that Hollander is older than him, not much, a few weeks. But looking at him, Ilya feels weary and old. He hates that.
