    Kristoph, cont'd:
She was also the murderer, but I won't bore you with the specifics. He ate glass for her. Nobody did anything of the sort when his own innocence was called into question; though I suppose that there was no question as to his guilt. What he did is not the sort of thing that can be covered up so easily.

    Trucy:
Oh, Mr. Gavin, what a silly thing to say! You can cover anything up.

    Kristoph:
I found that anecdote quite interesting. Do you think your father would eat glass for you, Trucy?

    Or, a three-man performance.

    Summary

Klavier Gavin is the most famous rockstar in the world. Guilty Love is about to go platinum and the tour sold out fourteen stadiums. So there's really, really no reason why one anonymous music critic on Youtube who hates him should get under his skin. And yet somehow he'd do just about anything to convince MikekoMusic to like him.

Apollo has been doing Youtube as a fun side hustle while he tries to break into the talent management industry, and he's just landed an assistant gig working for Kristoph Gavin. Whose main client is his golden boy younger brother. Whose music Apollo has been anonymously trashing for years.

Yeah, this is all going to go fine.

(No lawyers, no murders, just shenanigans. And Clay Terran lives.)

A hugely compassionate look into a twisted relationship. The writing is wonderful and, particularly in the second instalment, does a fantastic job of using a framing device to weave two narratives together.

Out they came. Little yellow petals, wet with crimson blood. Phoenix picked one up and looked at it, his hands shaking.

He coughed again, and two more sodden clumps of red and gold fell out his mouth. He could breathe again and fell back onto the floor, clutching the single petal in his hand.

(Oh.) he thought. (Oh. I love him. I've always loved him.)

A lovely, short snapshot of Phoenix returning to the courtroom. It's wonderfully balanced, with realism, history, a little bitterness, and the truth of the characters bleeding through every word.

Miles tries not to frown. "Me, Wright. I'd teach you."
Phoenix doesn't believe him, and Miles can tell. "What would be the point? It's not like I actually do that here, anyways." He jerks his head pointedly to the basement door. "It would be a waste of time."
"Wright," Miles interrupts, before his voice can turn bitter. "It's never a waste of time. Not with you."

Between piano playing and music lessons, Phoenix and Miles rebuild their bridges during the seven year gap.

One of the things I appreciate is when an author trusts their reader. Here, pickledragon is able to create a warm, intimate story in the barest of sketches, letting the reader fill in the blanks and complete the picture. There's a theme of showing people you love them, by helping them, by being considerate, by involving them, and the relationships between the three characters shines through with deep affection. This fic feels a lot like turning bad memories and activities good by changing to context: Phoenix being taught the piano by Miles, and choosing songs his family loves and Miles using everything von Karma gave him (money, knowledge) to make other people happy. This is just a sweet and soft fic that pretty much everyone should read.

Back in the present, Miles tried to resist the urge to strangle his best friend (Definitely. Totally.) as he slowly played the first few bars of Never Gonna Give You Up on a $200k Steinway.

"Wright. Are you trying to get yourself arrested for murder."

"I mean," Phoenix shrugs, "It wouldn't be anything new."

I'm obviously biased since this fic was written after I suggested a prompt, but I was absolutely blown away by this fic. To begin with, it's an intense topic, but one that's worth exploring: what unhealthy coping mechanisms did Miles Edgeworth adopt to deal with his trauma? And it is fitting that he would do something reckless, something where death is very much an option, because he still feels like suicide would be the "easy" way out. I love the imagery that vinn used here, how even with such sparse language I can see it vividly.

He used to do this more dangerously, yet also less dangerously.

    One-night stands.

Men who were bigger than him, had more control, had more power.

He'd follow them - either back to a shoddy apartment or to the alleyway outside the bar.

Struggling underneath someone more powerful than you - that was him giving up his control freely and willingly.

Miles Edgeworth has found balance. His therapy is going smoothly, his friendship with Phoenix Wright is the best it's ever been, his work takes up less of his time, and his dog is adorable. But is anything really balanced when you're hopelessly in love with your best friend and determined not to tell him?

A really great, all-rounder fic. A nice balance of angst, introspection, characterisation with a happy, deserved ending. Has some great Franziska interactions, as well. Miles is in therapy and decides to make his life better, which is always good!

“Ah-ha!” She all but shouted. “No, I don’t, because you’re both idiots! Foolish fools! You’ve been pining for this man for most of your life and you weren’t even sure he was gay until last week! And he’s been doing the same, pining like a fool while doing nothing to get himself out of his misery!”

Miles let out a mirthless chuckle.

“I doubt Phoenix has been pining. He has a life.”

“You have a life too, and yet you always make room in your calendar for all that pining time,” she scoffed.

This fic is beautifully crafted. The emotional layering is intense. It sneaks up on you and hurts your feelings with stuff that should seem obvious, but you didn't put the puzzle pieces together yet. This was written before DD, so it veers off canon a bit, however it still manages to be a great bridging piece between AJ and the later games. Basically, if you ever want to hurt yourself and think about the hows and whys of Edgeworth and Phoenix not being in contact during the 7 year gap, this fic is for you. Also, really good Klavier and Miles interactions and a great Larry (don't worry, he's in the fic just the right amount). The characterisation of Kristoph is masterful in particular, and though he isn't a main character his influence is still being felt by the characters.

They stared at one another. Edgeworth's look was one of steady loathing, he knew. He'd seen it in photographs. Kristoph's, though, shifted like the colors on a pigeon's neck. It was part scorn, part quiet amusement, and part the curiosity of a boy dismantling a live insect. And on top of it all, somehow, invitation. It was oily, a few degrees shy of room temperature, and absolutely repellent.

After a few seconds, Kristoph turned his head away and leaned back with the calm, barely bothered air of a man who'd just tried to open a door with the wrong key.
