The Enterprise is investigating an ion storm when mirror Kirk appears with an urgent message: mirror Spock is dead, his Resistance is foundering, and Spock must take his counterpart’s place in negotiations with the Terran Empire. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy agree to return to the mirror universe, only to find that all is not as it seems.

Spock states, and though it is said in a neutral tone of voice, simply a fact, Kirk still deflates, hurt flashing across his face before it is wiped away by the blank, charming smile that, if Spock were to be completely honest with himself, is starting to frustrate him. "We are bonded, and though you do your best to shield me from your emotions, you are not adept enough at doing so to prevent all emotional transference. You are sad. You have been sad."
