Summary
When Eskel sees the first petal, it's so small he thinks nothing of it. While witchers don’t contract common diseases, it doesn’t prevent them from coughing up a bit of blood every now and again. When more and more continue to fall from his lips, he can’t deny the evidence in his hands. Small, delicate, red-pink petals that could blow away in the breeze with a single breath. So little that when he goes to collect them onto his handkerchief, he has to time his movements with his slowing heartbeat so as to not damage them further. Eskel knows his love will never be requited but he can have this part of Lambert.

Jack supposes the reason they're playing along and being relatively docile is Will. He is, in Jack's opinion, the more dangerous one. He's the one that's more difficult to predict, that doesn't play by the rules and would just as soon break a man's neck as bare his own and beg for mercy. But Will isn't in great shape right now; his eyes are hazy and ringed with gold, sweat dampening his hair and making it cling to his forehead. His shirt is soaked under his arms and across his collar with preheat sweat, his cheeks flushed with fever.
And Hannibal, red-eyed and overcome with the instinct to take care of his mate, is perfectly content to remain cuffed and calm at Will's side, providing no rival Alpha gets too close, and Will keeps his whimpers of distress to himself.

The good thing about being bonded was that eventually, your cycles synced up. Heats and ruts could still be triggered by outside circumstances, but generally, both you and your partner suffered together, instead of alone. Will had always been more or less regular, heats coming every three months, give or take a few days. Hannibal was like clockwork, a perfectly scheduled three-day weekend every three months. When they got together, they synchronized almost immediately.
Will was busy, however. He didn’t always remember to track his heat- he had Hannibal for that. He didn’t realize he was late until he came home to a red-eyed Alpha growling at him from the doorway of the kitchen.
