Or Or: The whole time Ilya and Shane were having their trysts, Shane and Hayden had something else going on. Neither of them could put a name to it, but apparently it’s not ‘best friend behavior’. Hayden just wants to know why Jackie never said anything.
(P.S. - this is a fic mostly following Shayden’s QUEERPLATONIC RELATIONSHIP. I cannot stress this enough. There is no romance between Shane and Hayden, but they’re more than ‘just friends’.)

“Yes, that.” he hummed, “Was all nonsense. You’re good at what you do.”
Shane smiles, then. “I’m glad you think so.”
“Not as good as me, obviously.” Ilya added, and Shane rolled his eyes. “Can’t be too nice to you, can I?”
“Guess not.”

Shane Hollander has a chronic pain condition and Ilya Rozanov is deaf. This inevitably means that they're going to be compared to one another, and this is only made worse when they're drafted to rival teams The Montreal Metros and The Boston Bears as first and second pick.
It was rare enough that mainstream sports received one disabled player but two? Drafted during the same season and always one-upping each other?
Well, it was unheard of.

Summary
Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.
The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.

His bio parents kicked him out for being gay, and he wouldn't trade his family for anything in the world, but being the gay poster boy for the team that shunned his dad for being gay because he has his dad's name? He can't even focus on just playing hockey because everything he does is either good for the Metro's image or good for his supposed rival.
Aristotelis Floros has been captain of the American Juniors team twice, was the youngest member of the 2026 silver medal Team USA Men's Hockey Team, and was the second overall draft pick in 2026. To New York, which is a dream come fucking true. He's playing with Scott fucking Hunter, even if he announced 27-28 would be his last season Aris still gets to play with him! So fuck you, Hollander-Rozanov and your handsome fucking face and your goddamned superhero rescuing tendencies. Aris Floros is going to win the Stanley cup first.
