Volo is pleasant, nice and cheerful. Volo is lying. Volo does not fear pokemon, he seems to adore and Revere them and that is the only thing he hasn't lied about. Volo is covered in half truths, lies of omission and he is wearing a perfect mask, he is the perfect merchant, he is friendly and easy to approach and easy to talk to. It is undoubtedly a facade.
Kouji wants to break it. He wants to shatter that perfect, unscathed mask and bite it off his face. And Volo would bleed because his mask was glued to his face and it would definitely hurt when Kouji inevitably tears it off.
Instead, he smiles pleasantly at Volo. He is playing a lying game, so Kouji will play with him. Playing alone is lonely, after all.

Emmet sniffles and wipes his nose, face looking like he can’t decide what emotion he should be feeling (even though Ingo is the one with more right to be confused, here), and tilts his head. “Where have you been– where did you go?”
Um. Ingo does not know the answer to that question. He opens his mouth, thinking that perhaps the words will just flow, but they do not. He stammers, and the other man just moves back in to wrap his arms around him. Ingo relaxes into the hug much easier than the first time.
“I decided I do not care.” Emmet shakes his head into Ingo’s shoulder. “It does not matter. You are back now.”

Ingo finds himself in a place familiar, though he can't seem to remember anything about anything. He tries to explore, find a prompt for remembering, but he finds out he's not alone in the house before he gets the chance to grasp a memory.
