It made him… anxious.

They say they want him there with them, but Connor can't understand why. He's afraid of himself and what he's capable of, afraid that maybe these feelings don't have their place within him.
Despite all the doubts he may have, Connor finds that he desperately wants to live, because whenever he feels himself slipping and falling, they're here to catch him.

"Ever perceptive, my lady." Julien's bow is precise, regimented, rehearsed - exactly as deep as it needs to be to convey respect to the other Houses, and not an inch more. Trust him, of all people, to treat a social situation like a combat encounter. "What gave it away?"
"The hunched shoulders, mostly. Also the frowning, and the general air of aggression."
That coaxes a laugh out of him, a low, barking thing. He snorts, rolls his eyes at Aranessa for the barb, and she finds herself hard pressed not to smile, yet again.
It's easy to be informal around him. Too easy. It's part of why she tries to keep some degree of distance at events like this, more for her sake than his. She can't let the mask slip - but with him, the temptation has always been to forgo it entirely.

He will pour his son a glass of brandy, and sit him down in an ornate leather chair, and he will talk to him, deep into the night.
We have a blessing upon us, Raimond Davinos will say. He has pictured this conversation several times before, scripted it out painstakingly in his head, but this is not the way he planned for it to go. When we swore an oath to House Royce, we were...changed, magically. Permanently, and forever. This is the way of the fae. This is the magnitude of their gifts. And this is the depth of our loyalty. It lasts through life and lasts through death, all the way to the edge of the Golden Shore.

Everything had, in indelicate terms because the delicate ones simply weren't strong enough, gone to complete shit so fast. It wasn't like she hadn't seen it coming, but she thought they had more time. The Sundered Houses were slow, even in their evil. Their malice was terrible but predictable, their maneuvering insidious but gradual. The wholesale slaughter of two Houses, the blatant bid for absolute dominance—that wasn't how the world worked.
Except, of course, that it was, and that was precisely what Primus Tachonis had done, and now she was sitting in the dark woods listening to Vaelus pace around on guard, wearing a pair of too-big boots that had once belonged to Shadia Fang, because Aranessa didn't currently own shoes, let alone hiking boots.
