“The queerest team in the NHL,” Dillon corrected with barely a beat.
“We must be,” Shane said slowly, expression scrunched up as he seemed to seriously ponder the question. “There might be some teams with a closeted player, or maybe two, but five? Statistically speaking, that’s highly improbable.”

“What?” Shane says, although he very much knows what this means.
“I find this group on instagram, they are groupies... Anyway, they do very good job collecting good news about you.”
Shane feels his anxiety spike in the way it does whenever he is reminded that he is perceived outside a skating rink. He knows there are very nice people on the internet who write and draw very kind things about him. His mother sends him some of it. He gets updates from his agent. He signs things after games. He takes pictures at airports. “That’s nice, I guess.”
“There is one Hollanbabe–”
“Please stop using that word.”
“Is their name, Shane. Anyway, one of them comments on clip of you –”
“You’re really just watching my highlight reel, huh?”
“Is for opposition research.”
Shane smiles. “Of course.”

Summary
It was one of his favorite things to do. Watching his person play. Ilya was the most alive during it, and Shane just loved seeing him shine. In the arena, all the weight Ilya carried seemed to fall away, allowing him to be light.
Shane’s eyes never left Ilya, and when it happened, he barely registered at first.
It happened so fast. Suddenly the puck hit Ilya’s throat. Shane’s stomach dropped.
Ilya couldn’t breathe.
