Summary
Eddie’s shaking, his whole body feels like it's boiling from the inside out, nerve endings are blazing, he keeps trying to suck in air but instead of relief it only burns his lungs more. Every breath he takes in, the more he finds he needs.
The blurriness in his eyes is getting worrisome, and he’s infinitely glad this is a straight road, no out of the blue curves, because he’s pretty sure one good swerve would take him and his truck over the edge. All his useless belongings scattering across the expansive plane of the desert that leads him into Arizona, left to either be buried in the sand forever, or be scavenged apart by drivers who will doubtless pass by.
He can see it now; his whole entire meaningless life flashing before his very blurry eyes and for a moment he’s afraid it’s already happened, that the truck has already flipped and he didn’t notice. But then, through the heavy haze, he hears his name. the softest voice that’s dripping in worry.

“Nothing, nothing,” Steve says. “It’s just…well, Vickie’s over and…I was kinda wondering if I could just crash on you guys’ floor for the night?”
