"Dean," Cas says calmly, gingerly sitting his fork down, and oh, this is gonna be a thing, Dean can tell. Sure enough, it is because Cas goes on to say, "What would you think if I suggested we get married?"
Dean blinks and swallows the food in his mouth, staring at Cas curiously. "I would think...you were either on drugs or going insane, why?"
"I'm not inebriated, nor mentally unstable."
"I—I…" Dean takes in a deep breath, then blows it out heavily. "Cas, you're not fucking with me, are you?"
"I'm not," Cas tells him.
"Okay," he says, "fuck it, let's get hitched."
"Thank you," Cas murmurs sincerely, then picks his fork back up and goes right back to eating.

Summary
Cas comes back. It's not exactly the reunion that Dean is expecting.

Dean stares at him, flummoxed. Cas quite literally poured his heart out to Dean, gave a truly sappy and distressingly romantic speech and everything, then proceeded to give his life so that Dean could live his. And he wants to act like he doesn't want to see Dean, be around him, touch him?
Actually, Dean's ninety-nine percent sure that Cas probably wants to fuck him, and while he has no clue how he feels about that, he's pretty goddamn sure that means Cas doesn't get to act like this and make it authentic.
It feels strangely real, though, as if Cas wants nothing more than to get as far away from him as possible. This is a blatant contradiction. Even someone as weird as Cas doesn't want to get away from the person they have the desire to fuck five ways to Sunday, that they're in love with. That's not how these things work, so Dean isn't buying it.

To tie up the loose ends of a hunt, Dean is forced to go undercover and visit Brock Pleasure Ranch, a horrifying establishment that markets its inhabitants to people with ‘monstrous’ tastes.
It should have been a simple thing, to persuade a mer to give him a few scales for a spell. All part of the usual Winchester byline: saving people, hunting things.
But Castiel is far less of a ‘thing’ than Dean expected. He might not be human, but he’s definitely a person.
And that means he needs saving, too.

He willingly fell to earth, with the knowledge that he would be captured and enslaved, and eventually fall into the possession of the Righteous Man’s father. He was not prepared for what that would entail, and the horror he would be forced to face at his master’s hands.
Dean was seven when Dad came back from a hunting trip with a bound, beaten man in a tan coat that suddenly went everywhere with them. His job, Dad explained, was going to be protecting Dean and Sam while Dad was away hunting.
At first, Dean doesn’t understand why the man stays around just to basically babysit them... Until one terrible day he does: it’s not that Castiel won’t leave, it’s that he can’t — and after that, nothing will ever be the same.

“Dean…” Sam admonished softly, looking stricken.
Dean blinked, stunned by his own words. “I mean…I didn’t mean –“
Castiel swallowed, closing his eyes against a lance of pain in his chest that had nothing to do with the binding or the sigil. “Yes, you did. And its true, in any case.” Castiel gave him an out, but the words stung. He wasn’t human. Which meant he was – in a hunter’s mind – a creature.
An animal.
Something inside him felt like it was icing over...

Dean can't allow himself the luxury of getting attached.
So when he spends the best night of his life with a man who calls himself Emmanuel, he knows right away that nothing more will ever come of it. It doesn't even matter that Dean's unable to really forget the guy many weeks and months later, that is just the life.
But then Sam ends up cursed on a hunt and after a long and ultimately futile search they find themselves with only one option left to save him: the healing abilities of an angel.
Namely, the Fallen One.
Castiel.
Dean's never heard of the guy before, but if he's really capable of curing his brother, so be it.
He is in for a rather big surprise, though, when he suddenly sees himself confronted with a very familiar face and soon enough his life is turned upside down in a fairly inconvenient manner.

Maybe it's the unacceptable hole left in his life when his dumb best friend and partner in (the prevention of) crime decided to go and get himself killed. Maybe it's his brother, whose high-profile career and fantastic girlfriend and first-child-on-the-way are steadily leaving Dean in the dust. Pick one. Pick all of them. The why doesn't matter so much as the what, and the what is this: Dean is pretty sure he's going completely, certifiably insane. Castiel doesn’t mind working security duty; he was briefed shortly after the initial salvation of the Sword from the pit, and again before taking up his position. He knows what to do. However, it’s easy to forget that the green room isn’t real. Time moves differently there, the space ever-changing to make a prison of mountains, cathedrals, salt flats, orchards, and whatever Castiel was led to believe about Heaven’s greatest weapon—Dean Winchester is something entirely unexpected.
