Summary
Celine turned off the light, crawled in beside her, and lay on her back. Neither of them moved; neither of them reached for the other. There was only the breathing, in and out, a rhythm slower than any drum machine. Celine closed her eyes and tried to remember if there was ever a time they could have just held each other, no hands, no teeth.
She was almost asleep when Miyeong whispered, "Do you hate me?" It took her a second to realize the question was real.
"No," Celine whispered back, and meant it so little she almost choked on the word.
Hours later, Miyeong slept tangled in her, breathing shallow and steady, hair fanned across Celine’s chest. Celine stared at the ceiling—the crack, the branching, the memory of it morphing into something like a map. She ran her finger along Miyeong’s arm, barely touching, and wondered what to name the feeling that lived in the space between love and injury.

“Set it up first,” Mira said, not pausing her work.
And Zoey obeyed. She always set up her own kneeling spot because she knew how many pillows or blankets to use, depending on how deep in her mind she wanted to drift. She used folded blankets if it was only going to be for a short while, but she used pillows if it was going to be for a bit longer. But this time, she used both because she just wanted to drift and submit fully, and she didn’t want her knees to be bruised up from sitting on them.
Zoey’s favorite part wasn’t even the intimacy. It was the certainty, the feeling of purpose, unambiguous and absolute: be here, be still, be good. It was simple, predictable. Just what she needed in moments like this, moments where she didn’t want to be the one to make the choices, she wanted someone else to tell her what to do.

Zoey and Mira had made her promise to talk to them when she needed to or if something was wrong, but Rumi was already breaking that rule, and it only made her feel even worse.

“Sloppy means they don’t catch me.” Zoey straddled a chair backwards, making a show of flexing her bandaged knuckles. She tossed the ring and watch onto the polished wood. “For you.”
The chief picked up the ring, rolling it between thumb and forefinger. She studied the engraving inside—Zoey could tell from the tension in her forearm—then let it rest in her palm. “Victim had a wife.” Rumi murmured, not exactly sad but not approving of this either.

They’d gotten one of those fake trees from the discount store down the block. Romance had insisted on the tinsel, which now dripped from every available branch like glittering seaweed. The ornaments were mostly hand-made badly painted clay animals that looked like mutant cousins of the intended species, some origami shapes Mystery had attempted and then abandoned, and a few actual glass balls that Abby had broken and glued back together with an appalling amount of visible effort.

Summary
What if Rumi wasn't raised to be hunter? What if she was raised into both her hunter AND demon side?
What if she was raised by Gwi-Ma and the Saja Boys in the underworld?
_________________________________________________________After the incident, Celine knew she couldn't raise Rumi, and with her mother missing, she could only give the toddler to the demons.
She tried to take care of her, but soon learned that raising a demon child who was just growing into her demonic side; it was too much for the retired hunter to deal with.
And so,
She left the girl for the demons to find.
She hated to do it.
But at least Rumi would be with others like her.
Or Rumi is raised not knowing she's the third hunter (she's got no idea why she acts the way she does)
