Sonic and Tails are missing.
Not officially, Amy has been staying with them for a while now, but no one else has seen them. Amy brushes off all questions, and no one thinks twice. This is far from out of the ordinary. The brothers go on off-grid adventures all the time. Then, when Knuckles comes back after two months, Amy has a new scar. Large claw marks down her face. Her excuses for where Sonic and Tails are paper thin, and Knuckles can't give her the benefit of the doubt any longer. He takes Rouge and goes to the house for answers.
It's worse than they could have ever imagined.

It really is funny how long it takes before Maddie realizes that their new alien roommate only wears three items of clothing: socks, shoes, and gloves. That’s it.

Summary
Sonic knows he should be running faster. He's barely running at half his speed, and he's in a hurry to get home. But he's just so tired. The mission was brutal, to put it simply. Eggman pulled out every single trick to keep them busy, and with the team being down to just Sonic, Amy and Knuckles, it was a struggle to keep up— not that Sonic would ever admit that to Eggman. He kept throwing his usual taunts and one-liners, refusing to let the doctor know how worn down their little trio was becoming. It was almost a week of constant fighting, ambushes, and stealth missions.
And, of course, the glaring issue that was weighing on Sonic's mind.

When Sonic messages, it's usually one of two things. Either he's bored and deciding to make it Shadow's problem, or he's updating the other on an Eggman attack, as if Shadow doesn't already know the instant the Doctor decides to make an appearance. So when his phone starts incessantly beeping with message notifications, Shadow lets out a long-suffering groan, digging it out of his quills and bookmarking the page of the novel he had been so happily reading.

From their constant bickering, teasing and fighting, Doug had learned how he could rile the other up, how he could get the reaction he wanted out of him. He supposed it had to be the other way around too.
But two could play this game.
"So what if I did", he shot back, head dizzy from the steam, or the way Dylas was looking at him, or both.

Instead of fighting over the journal Stan tries to leave, but Ford isn't willing to let him go that easily. During the argument Stan comes into contact with a strange magical substance, and when he wakes up later he finds he's a bit smaller than he remembers.
Now not only does Ford have to worry about Bill taking over the world, he also has to figure out how to turn his brother back to normal.
