Charlie stepped closer, her heels clicking softly on the polished floor. “I want to teach you how to slow dance.”
Vox’s entire body went rigid. All thoughts left his head; only static remained as he squeaked out. “Slow dance?”
“Mm‑hmm!” She nodded enthusiastically. “It’s fun! And sweet! And I thought… maybe you’d like to try it with me.”
He swallowed hard. “I’ve never danced before. Not like that.”
“I know,” she said softly. “That’s why I want to teach you.”
He looked around the room—the lights, the empty space, the quiet. It all felt too intimate. Too focused. Too much like something he wasn’t supposed to want.
His hands twitched at his sides. He kept them there. He always kept them there.

Angel Dust’s eyes fluttered open to complete and utter darkness. The last thing he remembered was walking down a dim alley in the entertainment district, the familiar neon lights of the Pride Ring painting his fluffy white fur in hues of magenta and blue. Now, there was only suffocating blackness and the unmistakable scent of something coppery that made his stomach turn.
“Ah, you’re awake,” a voice crackled through the darkness, distorted by radio static. “I was beginning to worry I’d been too... enthusiastic.”

Every time she took another backward step, he shuffled forward. She held her hands in front of her, a useless attempt at protection. The back of her legs hit the mattress, and she fell onto the bed. Then he was above her. He held her down, one hand pressed against her stomach just hard enough for the threat to register. If she moved, if she tried anything too plucky, there would be unfavorable consequences.
“Deal’s a deal, darlin.’” His gruff voice scratched her ears.
