When little Hugo hid behind the sofa from his angry mother, he repeated to himself over and over again that the worst was already over and that tomorrow his mother would definitely pick him up, hug him, and tell him she loved him and it will be good and everything will be alright. When, on his very first day at his father's house, his new older brother had soundly beaten him for some minor offense, he still believed in this "wonderful good future." Now, lying under cover of night and listening to the breathing of one of his many brothers, he thought with a bitter smile that this was the best semblance of "good" he would ever receive.
