Summary
It's 1899, and the age of outlaws and gunslingers is coming to an end. After a job gone wrong, the Van der Linde gang has made for the western reaches of America to escape the law and start new lives. However, as they make their way into the snowclad Sierra Nevadas of California, the gang is ambushed and their members are scattered.
Already on the outs with the gang, Arthur Morgan now finds himself in unique company, exacerbating his doubts and spurring newfound questions in his heart and mind. Will Arthur stick to his leader's plan and the habits of loyalty, or will he start a new life without his gang—if he even can?

While grappling with his recent diagnosis, Arthur seeks out Albert Mason, who has traveled into the West Grizzlies in pursuit of photographing a rare white cougar—only to find him camping out with none other than one of Strauss's debtors, a shady man named Winton Holmes.
To make matters worse, Holmes recognizes Arthur, and threatens to expose his outlaw reputation if Arthur reveals Holmes's plan to kill the cougar for its valuable pelt. Haunted by his past, mourning the loss of his future, and struggling to understand his feelings for the photographer, Arthur must choose between deceiving Albert for his own sake, or coming clean and jeopardizing the limited time they have left together.

Albert didn’t know what to expect when he reluctantly agreed to the demands of Detective Milton to save himself from prosecution, but it certainly wasn’t falling for one of the van der Linde gang’s most notorious outlaws while spying on him. Arthur Morgan was violent one moment and startlingly sensitive the next, and Albert almost wished the man would just settle on one to make his own decision easier.
