But Taeui had long since stopped being afraid — Ilay always came like this — and all his fear dissolved, leaving only the habit of meeting the beast when the human inside him fell asleep, allowing the cold breath to brush against his skin. Because the beast, if not welcomed, would always find its way back anyway.
