Steve’s smile slips. “What, you think I came here for you?”
You scoff. “You’re here, aren’t you?”
He leans in, breath hot with beer. “Maybe I just wanted to see how much worse you could embarrass yourself.”
You blink. There it is. The thing he always does. He throws the knife, then watches to see if you’ll bleed.
You only threw the party for Steve.

And you hold him. You brush his hair back from his forehead and kiss the curve of his cheekbone, and for a few hours, it almost feels like you’re something real.
