Riku gave a soft little hum in agreement. He was watching the window, but the corners of his mouth twitched—like he knew Sora was watching him.
It was getting harder to pretend he wasn’t.They’d been dancing around this for months. No declarations, no kisses, just… this slow, magnetic pull. Little moments. Brushed fingers. Shared silences. The first time Riku had reached for his hand during a horror movie, Sora had pretended it was because Riku was scared. But neither of them let go.
Tonight, they were alone. Kairi was out of town. The storm had given them a perfect excuse not to go anywhere. And now the soft yellow lighting of the apartment bathed everything in warmth, like it was daring them to finally acknowledge it.

Riku had never missed one of Sora's birthdays and that was absolute fact. He kind of intended to change that tradition with this one, though. Sora had dozens of other friends. He was popular, captain of the soccer team, everything Riku wasn't and would never be. Why should he go to his childhood friend's stupid birthday party when they've barely talked in three years?
He might have actually skipped it if Sora hadn't actually invited him, but, well - even if they weren't friends anymore, it was hard to deny Sora anything.

There is no trace of envy in his voice, no malice. He sounds so excited for this Riku, so proud of him.
Lonely, Riku thinks, and immediately wishes he never came to this reality, never saw this Sora, never heard him. That he never had to confront a Sora that was lonely, because that was so deeply, deeply wrong, that Riku could almost feel it as a blow between his ribs, something more terrible and painful than any Organization member could ever inflict on him.
(or: when Riku tries to find Sora after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3, he finds a version he never thought could exist. They help each other.)

“Uh,” Riku spoke, looking around. The distinctive smell of humidity and dust reached his nose. A tell-tale sign that this classroom was rarely (if ever) used. “Is…this where we meet for the play?”
Just as he asked, the boy perked up. Without a second to miss, he jumped out of the chair and reached for Riku in a flash. He stood a bit too close, curious eyes looking up and down in jerky motions. It didn’t seem possible like the petite boy would stay still, for even a second, since as soon as Riku opened his mouth again, he began jumping and talking so fast he made Riku dizzy.
