Summary
Seonghwa always knew that his life was going to be hard. It was as plain for him to see as his own hands in front of him, but he wanted to try to live his life looking towards the sun.
His uncle made that hard. Whenever the stress of life became too much for him, his uncle would berate Seonghwa over it, blaming it on his father for bringing his mother into their lives, on him being too much like his mother. It always came back to his mother.
Because Seonghwa’s mother was a harpy.
When he was 12, his uncle had a debt to a pirate captain from a job that went very poorly because of him.
And Seonghwa was how he settled that debt. Seonghwa, to spare his uncle.

Seonghwa is half harpy in a world that sees nonhuman beings as other and unnatural, trapped in a life of piracy and kept against his will on board a scourge crew. But when the crew of the Horizon comes along and gives him a chance at a different life, he must find a way to settle into a life leagues apart from the one he's always known, try to fit himself into the tightly-knit fabric of the crew, while hiding the truth of himself. "What are you doing here?" Mike's face dropped as his eyes slid from El, past Max, and over to Will, "And what are you doing with them?"
"Shopping," El said with a blank expression on her face as Max smirked and added, "This is their new look, what do you think?"
"You know she's not allowed to be here. And Will, how could you just run off like that, we were worried!" Mike glared straight at Max despite the fact part of what he said was directed at Will.
"What are they, your little pets? El can't leave the cabin, and god forbid Will strays more than three feet from your shadow, despite the fact you were completely ignoring him!" Max snapped right back.
Or... A rewrite of Stranger Things starting at season 3 placing Will in El and Max's storyline, allowing Will to receive the support he needs to grow more confident in himself. Meanwhile, Mike considers what it might mean for him that he's more upset that his best friend ditched him to hang out with someone else, than he is about his girlfriend breaking up with him.
