The day after Gideon Nav’s birth, the town of Drearburh, TX saw her mother hanged from a Lyctor’s Tree, that her soul should be condemned to oblivion and her bones dance eternal as punishment for a crime so terrible no one’s ever dared mention it again. But this morning at dawn the sheriff found the tree struck by lightning, her noose cut, and her bones gone. Gideon can’t lay hands on her mother’s old repeating rifle, either. Something has compelled the dishonorable dead to hunt, and Gideon, a ranch hand with a decent sword arm but no idea where to start, needs help. Enter Sister Harrowhark Nonagesimus, a nun more interested in bone magic than offering spiritual comfort, and a childhood terror of Nav’s. She might be a great help if they can get along for five minutes, and if Gideon can convince her to stop obsessing over why the Western, Central, and Union Pacific Railroad Companies seem to be forging track with bone dust and quenching it in blood.

Some unknown force has resulted in the disappearance of the Radiance, just before the infection could reach its peak under the Pale King's rule. The mystery soon takes a back-burner to a rearranged custody agreement over Herrah's brood, some clumsy attempts to re-establish marital trust, and some long overdue re-evaluations of the Pure Vessel. The king will send his newly unusable creation to train under the Great Knights, and become their sixth.
Court intrigue, sibling bonding, goddess hunting, different brands of motherhood, and accidental arson are abound.

However: there is a strange man in a cloak who walks past Martin's remote little cottage every few days.
However: there is a moth that keeps getting stuck in Martin's house during the rain.
These events are not as disconnected as they first appear.

Summary
The Kingdom of Hallownest is a place brimming with possibilities, cradled by wastelands and overlooked by many different beings who only seek to see it flourish and grow.
A mistake, committed ages in the past and still in the path of being mended, encounters a great problem. Should it not be fixed, more than simply the kingdom will meet its demise.
