Since Alice had left, something had shifted between us. The intensity of the way he looked at me was striking. Had he always looked at me like that, or was this a new thing? Could I have been that oblivious? I knew he liked me. The good thing about Jacob is he was incredibly forward. I never had to guess. But this felt… different. More profound.
My feelings were foreign- it had been so long since I had felt this way. My heart beating a little faster, palms sweaty. I wanted to get closer. As close as I could. But Jacob and I were friends. Good friends. Best friends, even. If I kissed him now, I would ruin things. I needed his company like plants needed the sun. That’s what he was. My sunshine.
If we kissed, I would not be able to undo it. If things went awry. If he had to leave, I would be ruined.

"You're a vampire," she says calmly.
"Yes."
"I'm not sure whether to be relieved that I was right or terrified that I was right." She's not lying either. She's a bit of both right now.
"Terrified would be the commonly expected reaction," I say softly. Her face is rigid, she's obviously distressed, confused, overwhelmed. I want to help her, to use my gift to calm her, but equally I want her honesty in this moment. If I have any chance at all at honesty with her, she has to be able to process this at her pace.
"I was sort of hoping I had some kind of injury from banging my head so hard," she tells me, her tone and emotional state bitter and slightly wild. "I don't suppose there's any chance this is a hallucination?"

Summary
