„M-Merlin?“, Gaius stammered, sounding like he was on the verge of a heart attack.
„Yes?“, asked Merlin, puzzled.
Gaius nearly fell off his chair.
„Merlin, I can’t see you!“, he shouted.
„What do you mean you can’t see me? I‘m right here“, Merlin replied. „Maybe you need to get your glasses checked, they aren’t working properly.“
„Merlin, look down at your hands!“
Merlin did. Or rather he tried. Because he found that he couldn’t look at his own hands because there were no hands to look at. His hands were still there because he could feel them and one of them was holding up his spoon. It was just that they weren’t there.Or: Merlin turns himself invisible by accident and finally gets to see Arthur freaking out about him missing in all his emotionally constipated glory.

Summary
“Hey, Arthur.”
Merlin's voice comes across shaky, quiet but also relieved. Arthur sits up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, concern ebbing into his mind. “What time is it? Are you okay?”
“No–yeah, I’m…I’m okay. I'm sorry, I know it’s late or, well, early I guess. I just,” he sighs tiredly, “I don’t know.”
It’s not hard for Arthur to wake up fully, sitting up in bed like it’s routine. He knows when Merlin calls him at such hours it’s because he’s in need of something. And whatever that thing is, Arthur will give it to him. But something is different this time; it’s his voice, Arthur thinks, there’s something lurking in it that further feeds his concern.
Or
When Merlin is struggling mentally, he calls Arthur, opening a door to the light that's been shining underneath.
