Shen Wei looks at the fish tank, then back at Zhao Yunlan. “I’m not sure I’m following the significance of this.”
OR: Faced with a string of murders targeting university professors much like Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan assigns himself to keep Shen Wei safe. Shen Wei cannot seem to convince the man that he does not require a bodyguard.

He pulls his helmet off to reveal long, sweat-soaked hair with a shaggy undercut, bright grey eyes, and a smile that launches like an arrow straight through Lan Zhan’s chest.
No, he thinks, watching this trainwreck of a man shimmy between the narrow space dividing Song Lan’s back bumper and the next car’s hood like he’s doing some kind of dance step. Absolutely not.

At the end of the hall, a man was sitting on the edge of a chair, rubbing his hands together slowly like they wouldn’t settle down to praying. His hair was wispy and gray, sticking up on the side like he’d forgotten to comb over his comb-over. He was wearing slippers.
“Yeah. What about him?”
“The coffee, see?” The orderly leaned close so Starsky could sight down his pointing arm like he’d spotted some kind of rare bird. He smelled of bleach and licorice. “That guy’s wife has been in emergency surgery for four hours and he just came back from the cafeteria with two coffees.”
Starsky got it. “One for him. One for her.”

By the time they presented themselves to the citizen’s patrol on the outskirts of Carole, they’d become John and Will and Alison Baker (brothers, husband, sister, wife; they didn’t really specify unless pressed). Teal’c was already gone, leaving behind him an absence they could feel like a phantom limb. Michael was Michael and they didn’t specify much about him either. For a long time, Carter’s sentences had gaps in them where the “sir” used to be.

Rodney lifts his chin in the direction of what John is trying not to consider. He’s unable to stop trying to get a fix on the slithery non-event that is John Sheppard, newly orphaned. Troubleshooting. No, John admits, this is something else, something less calculating, more… more something. John considers exit strategies. He could swim to the mainland, maybe. Out of the corner of his eye, John can see Rodney deciding whether or not to step into the place where John is. Of course he does. It was easier when John thought Rodney was a coward, before Rodney proved him wrong.
John Sheppard knows a lot about being a hero, but some kinds of courage he has to learn.

From the shadows of the ramp under the control room comes a tall, straight figure. Her hair is blood red against the white of her gown, the blue of her skin. Stopping in the centre of the gate room, she leans her head to the side, thoughtful.
“Greetings,” she says, and even through the MALP’s tinny speaker she has the voice of a chorus, thousands whispering. “Lanteans.” She shows her teeth in what might be a smile. “But we are the Lanteans, now.”
Elizabeth finds herself smiling too and that’s all wrong but she can’t stop it. She nods, once and says, even though the mic is off and the Wraith can’t hear her, “I think we’ll call you Jane.”
