Kaz shrugs the proffered coat on one arm at a time, transferring his cane from hand to hand, and Wylan releases the thick fabric to settle snugly on his shoulders. Wylan is always quick to withdraw his hands, careful not to let them linger or brush against Kaz. But he hopes Kaz can feel the gesture for what it’s supposed to be anyway—a hug at the door; a friendly pat on the arm; the clasping of hands in parting. A thank you for bringing his home to life once more.

Summary
After the disastrous invasion of Escobar, Aral Vorkosigan is refusing to speak to his Emperor. In Ezar's final interrogation of Simon Illyan, he asks about Vorkosigan, Vorrutyer, and Sergeant Bothari. Simon does not wish to speak of it.

Aral's breath trickled out of him. He was exhausted by his younger self. What a legacy. There was a man once, clever, with beautiful eyes that appreciated beauty and engendered art and could see so clearly into Aral's livid soul, bruise and fury alike... A man now twisted with a madness that had Aral at its centre, that sadistic insanity infecting Prince Serg, and Ezar's plot circling all four of them like a great gyre.
Five, Aral corrected himself, glancing at Illyan. All five of them. The lieutenant may not know of the wider world of atrocity he aided in executing, but he was in it with Aral just the same, and Aral culpable for all of it. From Vorrutyer's lovingly crafted torture of Bothari to Ezar's mericilessly calculated disposal of Prince Serg.
