Honestly, Ed’s never felt so – relaxed around someone he just met. He never was. It was never this easy to be around someone and just talk to them the way they’ve done, which only suggests that they are, indeed, soulmates… but then it can’t be that Stede thinks that badly of him.
Then maybe it’s one-sided but as Stede is his soulmate then they have to be compatible on some level, and in that case it would make sense because – well, Stede wouldn’t see Ed’s scars, but he still would… like his company, he supposes.

When he had seen those pretty bright eyes staring down at him for the second time, he had been deliriously hoping for a remark about his face or at least a question about the state of it, because if – if he was the luckiest person alive and the dream of a man looking down at him somehow could see him the way no one else ever could, then he would certainly ask, wouldn’t he?But Ed hadn’t, and so Stede had just – well. He did see scars on Ed’s body, of course, but he was Blackbeard. Of course Blackbeard has scars.

“Come here.” Ed puts his hand back behind Stede’s neck and pulls him close. “Listen, I know you said no sex, but… would you try it, just once, with me? I promise we’ll stop if it ever gets to be too much. Solemn vow.”
Stede stays silent for a moment. He thinks of Mary, not even meeting his eyes as they performed their marital duties. And he thinks of Ed, pulling back after their first kiss, gazing at him as if Stede were the most beautiful thing in the world.
“Alright,” he whispers.
*Stede doesn't like sex. At least, he thinks he doesn't, because he's never had sex with someone he's actually attracted to before. Ed very patiently teaches him that sex can actually be enjoyable. There is crying. Bon apetit.
