Langdon frowned. “Sit,” he said.
Benny panted.
“Sit.”
Benny sniffed the grass.
“Sit.”
Benny looked gleeful as he wandered back into Dennis’ arms, allowing all the pets and kisses to his floppy ears.
“He doesn’t respect you,” Dennis said.

Mel sat back on her heels, rolling the ring between the pads of her fingers.
Langdon let her. He would let her keep it, let her put it on a chain around his neck and use it to tug him around the ER. He would let her put it in her pocket and give it back when she felt like he had earned it again, when he could make it through a shift without sticking a pill under his tongue or taking five to control the trembling of his jaw. He would let her wear it on her thumb like a prize.
He stuck out his left hand, palm relaxed and facing the floor. She wouldn’t even need to lean any closer to-
“C’mon King,” he said softly, “Make an honest man out of me.” -

“Do you know where you’re going?”
She realized it was a ridiculous question as it passed her lips, but Langdon looked at her, his eyes a little glassy, and shook his head no.

I could use a heart (I could use a home) by somnatic
“When were you going to tell us about your secret boyfriend?”
Frank nearly spat out his coffee. Fortunately, Santos wasn’t looking at him, her eyes focused on Mel with the expression of a cat who had trapped a bird.
Mel shut off the sink and dried the spoon. “I don’t have a secret boyfriend.” She wanted to ask where Santos had heard that, but also wanted the conversation to be over as soon as possible. Her pulse had picked up a little bit.
“Oh, come on.” Santos glanced at Whitaker for support, although he didn’t seem to be matching her conniving energy. “You were at the bar, having fun with all of us”—that was subjective, Mel thought—“and then you start texting someone and smiling really big and then you go get into the front seat of a car with someone who was man-shaped.” She punctuated the end of her sentence by waving her hand in the air, as if physically demonstrating what “man-shaped” meant. “We all know about your secret boyfriend.”
Frank looked a little hysterical, keeping his mouth pressed to the lip of his cup like it could hide the way his eyebrows had shot into his hairline. She really had to stop glancing at him. -

“Let me get this straight,” Mel says slowly. “You conned your way into the ER so you could tell me to get a life?”
“I wouldn’t put it quite like that.” Frank's face is serious, but his eyes are teasing. “But yes.”
“You know, this probably won’t be covered by your insurance,” she points out. “You just spent a couple hundred dollars to call me a loser to my face.”aka the con artist au

“I’m serious,” he says impassively, but his eyes are dancing. “There’s a reason we’re called con artists.”
She stares at him for a second, and then a laugh escapes. “Alright,” she says, grinning. “I apologize for knocking your art form.”
“I appreciate that,” Frank says flippantly. “How would you feel if I called you a homeopath?”
Mel shrugs. “Aside from being straight-up wrong, I do have an accredited medical degree, so it doesn’t really matter what you call me.”
He squints at her. “It’s that exact superior attitude that made me drop out of med school.”
“Uh huh,” Mel says, smiling into her glass. “Tell me, was this before or after they found stolen drugs in your locker?” -

The Things We Do Are Hard by billspaid
He wonders, when they’re walking to grab lunch from the cafeteria – another one of Frank’s adventures in following Mel wherever she goes as if she’s pulling him on a leash – if she’s aware of the fact that she’s one of the few people at work technically keeping him afloat. He doesn’t want to bring it up, scared that she’ll try and tell him that he’s a competent and well-established doctor – he’s not sure he could handle that again - but it isn’t lost on Frank how unstable he’d be without her.
