Summary
He takes a deep breath.
“I want him the way I should have wanted Jane.”
Max is quiet, when he finally manages to look at her again. Her brows draw together slightly, pausing.
“But,” she whispers, in the space between them. “Will is a boy.”
Mike feels new tears well up behind his lids.
“Max.”
Something shifts in her expression, her mouth parting slightly.
“Oh.”
It’s quiet. Mike’s mouth pulls itself into a bitter smile. “Yeah, oh.”
or, it’s summer ‘90, and while everyone is off to college, Mike and Max scoop up ice cream in the rebuild Starcourt Mall, reluctantly bonding over their shared hate in children (and Mike’s little sister and idle friends) who just can’t seem to leave them alone.
or, 5 years later it isn’t Robin and Steve working at Scoops Ahoy: it’s Max and Mike.

Summary
After losing her powers, her father, and most of her close friends in one fell swoop, El needs an outlet. She also needs to learn how to read and write and speak. Basic life skills. She desperately needs her friends. She needs to learn how to stand up for herself.
Honestly, El needs a lot of things.
What she finds, instead, is a snarky, sullen boy. Ambitious, and uncaring of others’ opinions. He doesn’t really teach her any of those things.
He does teach her how to throw a punch.
Or: Soulmates are a thing, and this changes a few things while the Byers are in Lenora.

Summary
"The first thing that El does once it’s all over is sit. Just sit. It is not a guilty sitting where she feels like she should be training instead, or a stolen sitting in between moments of running for her life or a tense sitting while trying to reach out and find someone in the beyond, it’s just sitting. Stiller and simpler than she’s let herself be in months, maybe years...She feels her breath moving through her body, feels her heart being in her chest and basks, not just in her calm, but in her life. The simple, beautiful, astronomical fact that she is alive."
Or, El Hopper lives beyond the final battle. And lives. And keeps on living. She figures out a lot of things about herself along the way.

Summary
Holy shit, Will thinks. Holy shit, that’s Mike Wheeler.
Dead center stage, his long fingers plucking expertly at a deep blue electric guitar, is a living ghost of Will’s desperately buried past. The central figure of his best childhood memories and worst adolescent shames, the boy he thought he’d left behind for good, the first and only person he’d ever really been in love with. Mike.
Chicago, 1993. Will is working as an illustrator, back in the Midwest for the first time since he left at 14. Mike is the frontman of an up-and-coming alt rock band he started with his college friends. Through sheer luck, their paths cross, and everything they ever left unsaid comes bubbling back to the surface.
