Then Obito tells him he's only one suitable for the job.
And fighting isn't so much a choice as it is something he's flung into head-first, his last decision ripped away from him in its entirety. But if he doesn't have a choice, he might as well try his best now that he's here.

Summary
They say the Uzumaki are blessed by Gods of the Sea. The waves are always calm for members of their Clan, the water does not seek to drown them. It parts for their ships as though they are holy figures. Uzumaki Naruto embarks on a journey across the ocean to Suna, where he will work for half a year. It is his first time leaving the oceanic nation of Uzushio, though he does not worry: for there has never been a ship to leave their ports that does not return in perfect shape, with crew intact. Of course, he’s heard stories of creatures that reside within the deep; monstrous beings or enchanting figures that seek to drown a passing sailor. But he’s never believed them. Why would he? The Uzumaki, after all, are loved by the sea.
(They forget, however, of what lurks within; for they love hungrily.)

The difference, the thing that convinces you that you are not dreaming, that it’s not just other’s too-tall expectations and your too-small self living in your head is the anger. The monster is so angry. It is burning things forgetting how to make sound and endless hunger and bitter madness. You don’t think that rage could ever be your own, because it feels older and larger than you’ll ever be.
That’s alright. It hasn’t learned yet that anger earns you nothing but broken teeth and growing pains growing more painful. You don’t think most people have. It’s one of the only things you know you have right.
There are four really.
They go like this; Your name is Monster. You must keep your promises. You will not live a long life. And anger gets you nowhere.

Summary
Falling in the depth of the lake, Naruto felt his heart slowing down and his limbs growing cold. So, this was how he was going to die, then? Darkness started to swallow him and an odd sentiment of peace took over the fear. The last thing Naruto remembered before closing his lids were the strong pull on his jacket, the most amazing black eyes and the warmth of the softest hand on his cheek. He had gone to heaven.
